Guelph [1] is nicknamed The Royal City, since its name comes from the imperial House of Guelph that once ruled Great Britain. The city is home to the University of Guelph.

Downtown rep cinema The Bookshelf shows slightly more unusual movies than elsewhere and also has a cafe, restaurant, bar and bookstore in the same building.


Bookshelf is on Quebec Street. Macondo Books (18 Wilson Street) is a used bookstore a couple of blocks away. Toko sells Dutch foods (118 Wyndham Street North).


Excellent South Asian food at Bollywood Bistro downtown (51 Cork Street East) and Latin American snacks at Salsateria (45 Cork Street East). The Cornerstone (1 Wyndham Street North) has vegetarian food, beer and coffee.
