Understand

Mongolian Gobi is one of the most remote and least trodden deserts in the world. The third in the world after the Sahara, and Arabian Desert, it covers nearly one-third of Mongolia. Also it is one of the world's the most beautiful, with mountain peaks, grasslands, desert steppes, sand dunes and oases.

South Gobi province (Umno Gov) is where most travelers end up, and with good reason. The three most popular destinations in the Gobi are accessible from Dalanzadgad (the capital of South Gobi province). Bayanzag, known to westerners as the flaming cliffs, is a two-hour drive from Dalanzadgad. This is where Roy Chapman Andrews discovered dinosaur bones in the 1920s. The cliffs and the surrounding area are beautiful. You can stay in one of the local ger camps and tour the cliffs during the day. The Gobi Marathon (gobimarathon.org) also takes place here every September. From Bayanzag most itineraries visit Khongoryn Els next. Known as the singing dunes, these are the largest sand dunes in Mongolia, and should not be missed if traveling through the Gobi. It is possible to ride a Bactrian camel and stay the night in a ger camp. Finally, Yoliin Am (Vulture's Valley) is a gorge that runs through the Gurvan Saihan mountain range about 40 km outside of Dalanzadgad. The canyon is known for having ice most of the year, and horses are available at the entrance to ride in.
