Gao is a region and a small city of 38.000 inhabitants on the Niger River in eastern Mali.
The city is a trade city. In the 15th and 16th centuries it was the centre of the Songhai Empire.
It was founded in the 7th century, when it was called Kawkaw
Point Afrique offers cheap flights from Paris or Marseille to Gao. The airport also has connections to other cities along the Niger.
