Fortuna (Costa Rica)

Default Banner.jpg

La Fortuna is in Plains of the North region of Costa Rica.

It serves as a starting point to Volcano Arenal and all the outdoor activities related to it. It is a nice little tourist base for adventure seekers.

Get in

Bus station is located in the centre, in front of supermarket MegaSuper. There are direct buses for San Jose at 12.45pm and 2.45pm. Buses to Upala (to visit Rio Celeste National Park) leave at 6.30am and 11.15am.

Get around

The town is only a few block wide, so everything is within walking distance.

Hike volcano Arenal - several trails exist

Enjoy several (paid) hot springs or you can visit a hot river/springs for free near Tabacon - cca 10km northwest out of town.

Do a daytrip to hike and see Rio Celeste (NP entry $12 as of Apr'16). Easily doable by bus to Katira (direction Upala, $4) combined with hitchhiking. Outside of main roads 9 out of 10 cars stop and even if half of them are not going your direction they are very helpful in general.

Many hotels, hostels, guesthouses gear toward tourist. Cheapest hostels start from $7 (Apr'16).
