Fort Washington is a community in Upper Dublin Township in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, and is considered a suburb of Philadelphia.

Population: 3,680 (2000 census)

During the Philadelphia campaign of the American Revolutionary War, George Washington and the Continental Army set up their camps here after their defeat at the Battle of Germantown in 1777. This was also immediately prior to their march to Valley Forge. During their encampment at Fort Washington the British and American forces met on the battle field, which is now know as the Battle of White Marsh. Today, the Fort Washington State Park contains an area dedicated to the primary American troops that were situated there.

Get in

Fort Washington is conveniently close to the Philadelphia International Airport. There are rental cars, SEPTA, and even the Regional Rail (R5), that is available to take to from the airport. Fort Washington has an actual Regional Rail and SEPTA stop, which is located no more than a half mile from a Holiday Inn. The Regional Rail (R5) also runs through Center City with connecting trains from New York and New Jersey.

One of the best parts about Fort Washington is the fact that it is in the middle of many places. Although Fort Washington is a very lovely place, it is what surrounds this quaint little town that makes it enjoyable to travel to. A train ride into Center City is only thirty-minutes, and from here you can see the Liberty Bell, the famous Art Museum and even City Hall. Also, close to Fort Washington, is Valley Forge - the historical landmark where the Continental Army stationed themselves for six months under the reign of General George Washington. If history and landmarks are not what interest you, then there are such places as Manayunk, Chestnut Hill and Ambler. All of these places are close by an easy to get too. Shopping is the main reason one may visit these places, but they are also extremely relaxing places to walk around.
