During the Philadelphia campaign of the American Revolutionary War, George Washington and the Continental Army set up their camps here after their defeat at the Battle of Germantown in 1777. This was also immediately prior to their march to Valley Forge. During their encampment at Fort Washington the British and American forces met on the battle field, which is now know as the Battle of White Marsh. Today, the Fort Washington State Park contains an area dedicated to the primary American troops that were situated there.
Fort Washington is conveniently close to the Philadelphia International Airport. Rental cars, SEPTA, and the Regional Rail (R5) are available to take to this location. Fort Washington has a Regional Rail and SEPTA stop. The Regional Rail (R5) also runs through Center City with connecting trains from New York and New Jersey.
