Fairport is a village in the Finger Lakes region of New York and a suburb of Rochester. Although the surrounding town is named Perinton, locals often use "Fairport" to describe the entire area, as both the local post office and the local school district are named after the village.
Located on the historic Erie Canal, Fairport today is what every old canalside village aspires to be. With its historic character, modern amenities, and friendly atmosphere, it's no wonder Money magazine named it one of the 100 best places to live in the country.
Like most villages in New York, Fairport lies at the junction of two state automobile routes. State Route 250 (Main Street) runs north-south, leading from Webster to Victor. State Route 31F (Church Street) goes east-west, from Pittsford to Macedon.
That said, though, the central business district of the village is centered not on the intersection of those two roads, but rather on the lift bridge that carries Route 250 over the Erie Canal. The dividing point between North Main and South Main is at the bridge, and that's where all of the action is in the village.
Boaters can sail or motor directly into the heart of the village by taking the canal, with mooring available between the Main Street and Parker Street bridges.
The sights and attractions of Fairport are mostly located within easy walking distance of the central business district. There are plenty of public parking lots, marked with distinctive signs, so leave the car and take a stroll around the village. Just be careful; if you must cross the very busy Route 250, do so only at a designated crosswalk.
Retail strips of more suburban character are available just a mile or two outside the village: to the west along Route 31F, to the north (Lloyd's Corners in Penfield) where Route 250 meets State Route 441, and to the south (Perinton Square) where Route 250 meets State Route 31. You'll find Wegmans supermarkets and plenty of chain restaurants in all three locations.
The other nearby canal communities are well worth visiting, especially Bushnell's Basin and Pittsford to the west. Off the canal, East Rochester is to the northwest; Route 31F heads out that way. The village of Victor is to the south, with the area's most upscale shopping mall nearby; take Route 250 to State Route 96.
For urban attractions and amenities, the city of Rochester is only about nine or ten miles away by road; take Route 31F west to Interstate 490.
