Çerkezköy is a city in Eastern Thrace.

Started its life as a village for Circassian refugees in 1800s (hence the name Çerkez-köy, which literally means "Circassian village"), the population of today's Çerkezköy is a mix of typical Thracian locals who are mostly descendants of Balkan emigrants who settled in the area in late 1800s/early 1900s and much more recent immigrants from central and eastern Turkey.

Çerkezköy today is a rapidly growing city of drab apartment blocks, surrounded by a diverse range of industries. You will have a hard time for finding a reason to spend time more than absolutely necessary in this place.

In local slang, Çerkezköy is simply known as Çerkez, though without giving much thought to its original meaning.

Get in

By train

Çerkezköy's station, which lies around 2 km east of city centre, welcomes trains from Istanbul twice daily [1], both departing from Sirkeci station at 3:50PM (which heads all the way to Kapıkule on Bulgarian border via Çorlu and Edirne) and at 6PM, which has its terminus at Çerkezköy. There is also normally a morning train departing at 8:30AM and heading for Uzunköprü on the Greek border, but as of September 2010, it is suspended due to track renovations along the way. Train trip from Istanbul takes a little more than two hours.

You can also take the above trains on their way back to Istanbul, to get to Çerkezköy from destinations west (i.e. Edirne, Çorlu and others on the way).

By bus and minibus

Çerkezköy is connected to Istanbul by hourly buses, which takes around an hour.

An extensive network of minibuses and dolmuş minibüses connect Çerkezköy with surrounding towns and cities of Tekirdağ and Çorlu to south, and Saray and Vize to north.

By car

A motorway, branching off the main O-3/E80 (toll road), connect the city with Istanbul and Edirne and ends almost at the city centre. Another well surfaced highway up to motorway standards connect with Çorlu to south and a narrower but still well surfaced one with Saray in the north.
