The Metropolitan Borough of Bolton is the administrative area covering Bolton, Farnworth, Westhoughton, Horwich, Little Lever, Kearsley,Turton and Blackrod. Bolton is only 40 miles from Blackpool. Bolton is pronounced locally as Bultern. HistoryBolton has a Saxon heritage. Smithills was built on the site of Saxon Palace. The present Parish Church is the third on this site. the first church was Saxon. The town was important during the Civil War as a parliamentary stronghold. There was a Massacre in 1644 and the seventh Earl of Derby was executed in Churchgate on October 15th 1651. This last event is commemorated annually on the nearest Saturday outside ye olde Man & Scythe Inn by a street play. Hall i'th' Wood is a famous building worth visiting with its civil war and industrial revolution history. Many of its old mills and chimneys have gone but it still attracts visitors to modern and old attractions.

The famous Fish and Veg Market, the newly developed Market Hall and Churchgate are worth visiting. RivalriesBolton has a very strong rivalry with Neighbouring Bury,and Bury with Bolton.This is due to them being near each other but mainly because of football.The 2 Boroughs have often met in football matches were fights have broke out.The Rivalry continues today and if you were to ask the people of Bolton and Bury they would say them both hate each other.Other Local Rivals are Blackburn,and Wigan.

EatOne of Bolton's most prized food outlets is Ye Olde Pastie Shoppe on Churchgate (off Bradshawgate). It's only open during weekdays and is renowned for it's Pasties.
