Bikol is a language spoken by people in the Bicol region on southeastern Luzon in the Philippines. It was highly influenced by the Spanish language.

Pronunciation guide

Vowels

The Bicol language generally has only 5 main vowels. They are pronounced just like their English counterparts. But there are some tricky pronunciations when reading Bicol texts, like glottal stops.

  • Aa = as in father
  • Ee = as in eggplant
  • Ii = as in ink
  • Oo = as in order
  • Uu = as in oooohh (not 'u' in "under")

The ' is a glottal stop just like saying the word "butter" with a stop in the middle. (Buhh'er)

Consonants

  • Pronounced like English alphabet*
