Navigation bar[edit]

Evan, would it not be a good idea to link "help" in the navigation bar to Wikitravel Shared:Help instead of to en:. That way, one does not have to work on two web sites at the same time...i.e. edit Shared in one window and look for help on en: in another window. What do you think? Best Regards, Riggwelter 09:30, 7 March 2006 (EST)

Travellers' pub[edit]

Eh, I just realised we do not seem to have a pub here. That link could go in the navigation bar too, perhaps? The place itself is created, even if is only a hole in the ground at the moment: Travellers' pub. Riggwelter 09:33, 7 March 2006 (EST)

Thanks you understood perfectly. I think it would be more useful/helpful with that as the link. - Sapphire 00:37, 25 May 2006 (EDT)

Another request[edit]

On the upload page will you change the drop down menu when some selects the option of "Don't know" to use the Template:Dont know (Without the apostrophe)? Thanks. - Sapphire 22:45, 10 June 2006 (EDT) I receive an error message everytime I try to create Template:Don't know:

A database query syntax error has occurred. This may indicate a bug in the software. The last attempted database query was: (SQL query hidden) from within function "getTemplatesTo". MySQL returned error "1064: You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near 't_know}}%' OR old_text LIKE '%{{Don't_know|%' OR old_text LIKE ' (".

Thanks. -Sapphire 23:26, 15 June 2006 (EDT)

Pt: admin[edit]

Hi Evan. So far, pt: has no Administrator operating on Shared. Do you think you could fix that, please? Thanks. Ricardo (Rmx) 18:49, 14 August 2006 (EDT)

Done! --Evan 20:47, 14 August 2006 (EDT)

Evan, earlier today, no, sorry, yesterday, I created Wikitravel Shared:Liaisons. The page serves several purposes, but here are a few:

  • A list of all the liaisons active on the various Wikitravel language versions
  • An embryo to some sort of manual for liaisons - what are we supposed to do?
  • A foundation for contact between the liaisons (apart from the liaison reports).
  • One more step in making Shared the base for all inter-language work

Could you, who knows the liaisons, make sure they sign the list or become aware of its existence, please? In a way, I assume this also means that en: has to appoint a/a few liaison(s) as well. I hope this is in line with your intention of making Shared the common ground for the language versions we have. I have posted a note in the Travellers' pub too. Riggwelter 20:23, 26 August 2006 (EDT)

Please disregard this - we redirected it to Wikitravel Shared:Language versions instead. However - en: still needs liaisons....Riggwelter

Duplicated bug report[edit]

I created Tech:Local spam blacklist - capitalisation loophole? and then Tech:Local spam blacklist - capitalisation loophole - they both report the same thing. Please can you delete the one that ends with a question mark - apologies & thanks. ~ 05:42, 1 November 2006 (EST)

Hey, since you've been doing a lot of uploading I wanted to ask you a favor. Before you add any information about an image in the "Summary" boxes would you please click in the Summary box, then scroll down to the very bottom of the page and click on the "Image Credit" template. This will automagically import the template into the Summary box. To use the template simply fill out all of the values. When you use the "Location=" value simply type in the the name of the place the image was taken, don't link to the page. Jani edited the template which reads the input and automagically turns what you type into a link and categorizes the image. Thanks. -- Andrew Haggard (Sapphire) 06:44, 11 January 2007 (EST)

Admin for ca:[edit]

I've just noticed that ca: still doesn't have an admin who actually speaks the language. I've been closely following the progress there and I think Carmepla has shown lots of commitment to the project. She has also done an outstanding job at the expedition plus loads of translations of policies and guidelines, which probably helps qualifying her for the job. If she's willing, do you think she could be set up as admin there (and here)? -- Ricardo (Rmx) 14:12, 27 February 2007 (EST)

Carme has been voted for admin by several users now. Could you please drop by and do the bureaucrat magic for her there? Thanks. -- Ricardo (Rmx) 22:16, 20 March 2007 (EDT)
Sorry about the delay. I'll get it set up immediately. --Evan 13:43, 22 March 2007 (EDT)

OpenID single signon problem[edit]

Hi, sorry to bother you but I still have a problem described here. What has become of it? --Episteme 13:14, 28 February 2007 (EST)

Protected namespace on ro:[edit]

Vlad tells me the mediawiki namespace is protected on Romanian Wikitravel, so would you mind updating ro:MediaWiki:Recentchangestext to include the new Catalan and Finnish pages to the list? For ease of reference, they are [[ca:Especial:Recentchanges]] and [[fi:Toiminnot:Recentchanges]]. Having Wikitravel Shared linked from their Navigation toolbar would be cool too. Thanks. Ricardo (Rmx) 16:24, 5 March 2007 (EST)

Done! Also, the MediaWiki namespace is protected (edit by admins only) on all Wikitravel language versions. I don't think that's something I can change. --Evan 10:33, 15 March 2007 (EDT)
Thank you for that and sorry I wasn't quite precise before - Vlad is an admin and says he can't edit those pages either. -- Ricardo (Rmx) 22:22, 20 March 2007 (EDT)

Hey you left this msg for me

We need to do some customization of the interface. There's a page at hi:Special:Allmessages for doing this. It's not simple, but you can read more about the system at .

How am I suppose to edit hi:Special:Allmessages?

Upamanyuwikitravelshared 09:13, 21 March 2007 (EDT)

You have to be an admin; you're now an admin. I should have made that more clear. I'm on semi-vacation now, so I only get online for a few hours a day. Sorry I missed you last cycle. --Evan 16:52, 21 March 2007 (EDT)

There's s'thing wrong with Hi? No link is working. When I click on any link in the sidebar, the site claims that the page is non-existent. Upamanyu -- Write2me 12:10, 11 May 2007 (EDT)

hebrew version[edit]

hello' I would like to be a "go-between" to the Hebrew version of wikitravel, just tell me what to do. Orel zion 05:14, 28 May 2007 (EDT)

Hurray! That's great news! Let's talk on the talk page. --Evan 10:59, 28 May 2007 (EDT)

a question. How do I add tools to the upper eddittool? Orel zion 06:03, 11 June 2007 (EDT)

ToC + not working in Konqueror[edit]

Evan, I bet you are watching the page but in case you aren't I'll just mention here that I added a note at Tech:Table of contents makes too much whitespace#+ sign not working?. HTH :-) Rogerhc 02:05, 3 June 2007 (EDT)

Thanks. Debugging for Konq is on my list of things to do. I think Safari uses the same Javascript library and HTML rendering engine. --Evan 09:55, 11 June 2007 (EDT)/
I studied this + twisty still not expanding TOC headings in Konqueror (in KDE v.3.5.6 on Kubuntu) today and found that Konqueror does not like the negative margin-left in this part of main.css:
    a.toc-arrow {
       float: left;
       margin-left: -3.5ex;
       text-decoration: none;
Looks like a bug in Konqueror. To make Konqueror happy the spacing might be accomplished some other way -- maybe with padding-left:3.5ex on the toggleless items instead of margin-left:-3.5ex; on the toggle items. Maybe for Konqueror users only, till Konqueror is fixed. --Rogerhc 21:11, 20 August 2007 (EDT)
Problem with that is then items that are long enough to wrap wrap too far into the left margin and that looks bad. Tried it. Arggh. I hope someone will fix Konqueror. --Rogerhc 16:23, 21 August 2007 (EDT)
May also help to remove the "float:left;" and "text-decoration:none;" declarations there. They are redundant there. --Rogerhc 21:58, 20 August 2007 (EDT)

I filed a Konqueror bug including a test case. I hope it helps someone fix the bug in Konqueror itself or whatever library it is in. --Rogerhc 03:46, 22 August 2007 (EDT)

Hebrew version (again)[edit]

Hi, I'd appreciate it if you could help us out with a task that requires a bureaucrat. Please see the discussion here. Thanks, Zvika 15:48, 12 June 2007 (EDT)

Thanks for your help, have a nice day! Zvika 10:56, 13 June 2007 (EDT)

Hebrew version (Yes, again)[edit]

I would like to ask you to make user משתמש:צביקה an administrator. Please. 14:50, 28 June 2007 (EDT)

So, are you going to do this? Orel zion 10:32, 8 August 2007 (EDT)
Hi Evan. I would like to ask you to make he:משתמש:צביקה an administrator in the Hebrew version. Can you do this please? Orel zion 01:28, 21 September 2007 (EDT)

Admin on en:[edit]

I don't appear to have admin rights on Shared. Can you flip my switch / toggle my box? Thanks. Gorilla Jones 23:31, 25 July 2007 (EDT)

Would you replace the "dont know" tag with a licensing tag? → Image:Evan and amita.jpg -- Tatata 23:20, 6 August 2007 (EDT)

I found another one. → Image:Feed-icon16x16.png -- Tatata 09:42, 8 August 2007 (EDT)

I made a list of your "dont know" tagged images[1]. Would you check and fix them? -- Tatata 00:14, 15 August 2007 (EDT)

Me? A bureaucrat? Oh dear![edit]

Hm, methinks the nomination period seem to have expired... :-) Riggwelter 03:31, 14 August 2007 (EDT)

code request[edit]

any chance you could post the code on how you got the collapsible TOC? I really wanna add that to my wiki. Thanks.

pt: new admin[edit]

We've voted for a new admin on pt:, could you give Usuário:Sylx100 admin status, please? Thank you. --Ricardo (Rmx) 16:13, 1 November 2007 (EDT)

Request for XML data base dump or other possible collaboration.[edit]

Hi Evan,

I am creating an new home exchange website and would be most interested in using the wikitravel database for the benefit of our members. If it is possible to collaborate it could a real benefit to wikitravel users as well as our home exchange site. I have outlined how it would benefit what we are proposing on my user page here: User:Calverley Could you take a look at it and pass it on to the appropriate people. I would like to know what is possible.

Thanks for you help , Grant Calverley

Hi today i googled for UN/LOCODE:DEBER and found wikitravel. Nice to see that you did something with the codes :-). Here are some ideas and infos: Tobias Conradi 06:50, 11 April 2008 (EDT)
