Tech:Delete Working Inconsistently

From Wikitravel Shared
Jump to: navigation, search

What happens[edit]

Starting today I've twice seen problems with deletion. For example, go to Italian Wikitravel and try to delete it:Atollo Johnston. I'm presented with the "deletion success" page, but the file isn't deleted. However, an entry appears in the deletion log, and repeating the steps causes multiple entries to be added to the logs.

The same thing happened with en:Please follow or notice me Make m ontario cottage rentals dream come true love xoxo 9, although after three tries that file was deleted successfully.

See also en:User:HardeeAbbate367 which I've "deleted" three times now. -- Ryan 15:30, 11 July 2012 (EDT)

When it happens[edit]

I don't think it is consistent - some files were deleted successfully today. Unsigned comment by IBobi (talkcontribs) .

It's not consistent - "Tech:Delete Working Inconsistently" -- Ryan 15:30, 11 July 2012 (EDT)
Sorry, I misread a diff. -- Ryan 19:10, 11 July 2012 (EDT)

Additional comments[edit]

Looking into this Ryan.--IBobi talk email 15:08, 11 July 2012 (EDT)

I was able to delete the previously mentioned pages just now - not sure if IB did something, or if a sufficient amount of time passed to release whatever lock or clear whatever cache was the original source of the problem. If it happens again I'll let you know. -- Ryan 02:41, 12 July 2012 (EDT)
OK I will remove from bug list. Thanks.--IBobi talk email 13:09, 12 July 2012 (EDT)
Starting yesterday it is again taking multiple attempts to delete some topics. See today's deletion log on en: where (for example) it took four tries to delete "Death Moving to London in 2 CRM via internet days being a TT liiieeesss". -- Ryan 12:50, 18 July 2012 (EDT)
We're on it. Thanks Ryan,--IBobi talk email 13:54, 18 July 2012 (EDT)
See en:User:Towandaorob and en:User:72x64libb, both of which I've tried multiple times to delete without success. -- Ryan 15:49, 18 July 2012 (EDT)

Bobi: How is the progress? This issue really starts to get annoying. Otherwise i stop patrolling for a while. Regards, Jc8136 10:42, 19 July 2012 (EDT)

Since this is an inconsistently appearing issue, it's much harder to nail down. I had an update early this morning from tech that they're upgrading to MW1.17.5, hoping that cures it; but also looking at database queries. I'll keep you posted, I know this is a significant one, especially in conjunction with the spambot spawning issue caused by the 1.17 security hole.--IBobi talk email 15:00, 19 July 2012 (EDT)
IBobi: I would not call it inconsistently any more, as it appears quite often right now. Active users like AHeenen are significantly more affected than irregular user. It also effects the track record by established users. That's very negative. Jc8136 03:36, 20 July 2012 (EDT)
This might be an unnecessary remark, but we have the same problem on sv:... (examples: sv:Lilo & Stitch (film), mysteriously linked to sv:Lilo, and sv:Oliver & gänget, mysteriously linked to sv:Oliver, both of which appears to be deleted, but are still "blue-linked") so, it is really a site-wide bug. But I assume you knew that already. Riggwelter 11:51, 20 July 2012 (EDT)
Is Tech:Move function doesn't work on pt: a related issue? Riggwelter 11:54, 20 July 2012 (EDT)

We think all of that is related to 1.17. We are going to implement a fix on Monday.--IBobi talk email 14:34, 20 July 2012 (EDT)

IBobi: It's Monday after 9 AM on the West Coast, so how is your plan? The problem gets worse with the spambots and it would be good if you would solve it today! Jc8136 13:04, 23 July 2012 (EDT)
Should be within 12 hours; site speed will be affected afterward while the cache rebuilds, but hopefully both issues will resolve.--IBobi talk email 17:05, 23 July 2012 (EDT)
IBobi, just tried on en and the error still exists. Do you think you will get this corrected this week? Spambots really start to damage the track record of good contributors and you do nothing? You really give reason to leave Wikitravel!Jc8136 03:04, 24 July 2012 (EDT)
Special:Version shows 1.17.5, but the inability to delete pages has not been resolved. See my entries from around 7:30 AM Pacific: en:Special:Log/delete - three out of eight were not actually deleted. -- Ryan 10:38, 24 July 2012 (EDT)
It does seem that the spambot issue is resolved, but the deletion issue is still a problem then? I have just successfully deleted the one page that was still undeleted from your morning's 8 attempts. Let's see how the deletions go for a few more hours,; meanwhile I will be sure that tech continues work on that issue. Thank all, --IBobi talk email 13:30, 24 July 2012 (EDT)

FYI I was just able to delete several spambots on the first attempt; on the other hand took two tries.--IBobi talk email 13:37, 24 July 2012 (EDT)

Some (1/3) of the deletion works but [1] just failed again a minute ago. I see that other users have this issue too. Jc8136 13:43, 24 July 2012 (EDT)
Thank you -- it does appear that this is still an issue.--IBobi talk email 14:23, 24 July 2012 (EDT)
Significant less spambots today but one deletion didn't work: [2]. I tried the second time and now it is deleted. Jc8136 09:41, 25 July 2012 (EDT)
I'm seeing exactly the same behavior. We're still working this issue. Our technicians are speculating that there is an intermittent disconnect between the WT database and mySQL; I'll update as soon as I have more info. Thank you,--IBobi talk email 14:28, 25 July 2012 (EDT)

Issue is not solved and spambots are back. We have an increasing number of userpage we can't delete [[3]] and more worrisome, even some blocked and protected userpage are used. Jc8136 07:31, 26 July 2012 (EDT)

I was able to delete all of the queued files, so this issue may now be resolved. -- Ryan 00:27, 1 August 2012 (EDT)
