Ridiculous ads[edit]

Today I'm being assaulted on English Wikitravel by an extremely obnoxious animated ad. The border (with blinking text that says "WINNER") rapidly blinks between cyan and magenta; it says "You have won a free laptop!" It's done in Flash, and I'm not about to click on it, so I have no way of knowing the originator of the ad, but it's clearly unacceptable. LtPowers 10:47, 8 February 2012 (EST)

Agree! I will try to track it down and kill it; if you see it again, try to nab any tracking info you can get from it (Firebug) or a screenshot & email me. Thank you, LtPowers.--IBobi 18:12, 8 February 2012 (EST)
I got it. Millionth visitor. Awful. We'll kill it.--IBobi 18:23, 8 February 2012 (EST)

Today I'm seeing animated ads from a company called "Undertone". One ad was for the Houston Museum of Science; another was for Choice Hotels. These animated ads violate policy. LtPowers 16:57, 14 June 2012 (EDT)

Can you screenshot them and send them to me so that I can have them blocked? I don't think I can flag them with just a description.--IBobi 19:21, 14 June 2012 (EDT)
I'm not sure what a screenshot would tell you that I didn't, but I'll try to remember to capture one next time. LtPowers 07:27, 19 June 2012 (EDT)
Oh look, there's one now: File:Choice hotels animated ad.png LtPowers 07:31, 19 June 2012 (EDT)
Here's the other one: File:HMNS animated ad.png LtPowers 08:17, 19 June 2012 (EDT)

I have reported them to our ad-trafficking unit; they should disappear shortly. Thank you,--IBobi 13:13, 20 June 2012 (EDT)

Here's a new one: File:Norwegian Cruise Line ad.png -- LtPowers 21:57, 21 June 2012 (EDT)
Reported.--IBobi 13:58, 22 June 2012 (EDT)
I'm still seeing this ad and others from Choice Hotels, as well as variants on the Norwegian Cruise Line ad. In fact, I'm currently seeing a Choice and a Norwegian ad on the same page. LtPowers 16:13, 23 June 2012 (EDT)

Three more: File:Foxwoods ad.png, File:State Farm ad.png, and File:United Club ad.png. You need to figure out how to nip these animated ads in the bud, rather than making me screenshot 'em every time they get through. They are very much against our Advertising policy. LtPowers 19:11, 6 July 2012 (EDT)

I wish I could. Unfortunately it's not possible on any site -- that's just how advertising networks work. We can tell them not to serve certain kinds of ads, but some get through their filters and we need to be reactive to get them off here. Thanks for reporting; I have passed this on to our ad ops.--IBobi 19:54, 6 July 2012 (EDT)
Then you need to find a new ad provider, because these are against policy, and it should not be up to me to undertake a three-minute process every time I see one that violates our policies. Here's the latest egregious violation: File:NYStateFairAd.png. Note that the add is a horizontal banner ad, a ridiculous 728 pixels wide. LtPowers 11:33, 14 August 2012 (EDT)
What page did you find that ad serving on? Definitely should not be there.--IBobi talk email 15:25, 14 August 2012 (EDT)
I was editing en:Walt Disney World/Magic Kingdom, though I expect the ad selection was based more on my location (in New York State) than on the page I was editing. LtPowers 16:16, 16 August 2012 (EDT)
Should be blocked now; that must have been an error with how that particular ad was formatted, because we have no horizontal placements on the site at all! Let me know if anything like that shows up. Thanks Lt.--IBobi talk email 17:44, 16 August 2012 (EDT)

Proposed changes[edit]

IBobi, representing IB, has proposed two (relatively) minor changes to this policy to accommodate the booking tool. Please see Tech:Add booking tool to WT#Implementation, time-frame, and policy. LtPowers 16:44, 5 March 2012 (EST)
