Xidi (西递; Xīdì​​) is a village in Anhui Province in China.

Get in[edit]

By bus from Tunxi (once every hour, 6am to 4pm with a break at noon as of May 2014. The bus's final destination is Hongcun. Taxi 150 - 180 RMB)

Get around[edit]

This is a walking village. People have walked these streets for hundreds of years. Most streets are 2 Meters wide or less. Pedestrians might see a bicycle but no cars or taxis. The streams require care and so everyone is very careful.

  • Nice old and charming city without cars on narrow streets. During the day, many Chinese tourists groups are walking around but there are less than in Hongcun. Besides tourist you will see many art students painting pictures everywhere. After dark it is much more quiet. See the light show on the lake after dark.

A light show plays on the hill near the lake and on the lake with various fountains.

As you walk around the city, some houses are open for tours and show interesting glimpses into ancient history and local life. There is an art gallery displaying some items of local historical significance.

There is a cultural demonstration area showing cultures from around the world.

After dark the lights come on (check the hours) and the streams flowing through the streets are spectacular. This is an opportunity that day visitors may miss. The lights likely go off at some point. Those streams running through the village may present a challenge to navigation when the lights go out. The streams are deep and a fall will likely require medical attention. Attention is required.

  • Try the small restaurants. Often you can walk into the kitchen and choose the ingredients of your dish.  Tip: ask for the price when you order to avoid surprises after ordering the bill.

  • Rice Wine Brewery. Close to the entrance of the city (just 50 meters after entering the small streets) there is a rice wine brewery. There you can try different kinds of wine for free plus having a glass at the bar.  edit

  • Xidi Travel Lodge. checkout: noon. Nice clean hotel directly at the entrance of the city. The breakfast is served in an old building. If you prefer western breakfast you can ask at the reception for it (surcharge 20 RMB per Person - This is a UNESCO World Heritage site). Traditional traveler inns with baths and showers abound. They can be booked by the app on your phone. Expect Chinese (language) only, but people are very friendly. Imagine You were travelling on foot hundreds of years ago. Where else on earth can you stay in such a place and experience this ancient culture? ca. 500 RMB.  edit
