Wuzhen is a water town in Tongxiang.
Wuzhen is a water town close to Shanghai, possible to reach on a day trip. Worth a visit, though it can be crowded at weekends. The town has numerous bridges, old wooden houses and waterside pavilions.
The main tourist area is split in two - a West Scenic Area and an East Scenic Area about a kilometer apart.
A bus service leaves on the weekends from at 7:45 AM from Hongkou Soccer Stadium calling at Shanghai stadium at 8:15 AM. From Hongkou Stadium metro, come out of exit 1, turn left, squeezing through the silvery gate follow the path round in front of the restaurants. You'll find a ticket office for the buses just inside the gate to the parking lot, opposite the KFC. Tickets are 160 RMB including a pass for the East Scenic Area.
From Shanghai take a metro towards Shanghai Honquiao Railway Station. Exit the station and go up to level 2 to buy a High-speed train ticket to Tongxing station (40 minutes, ¥¥51. Oct - 2018). From Tongxing terminal take bus K282 (¥5 - Oct 2018) towards the Wuzhen Bus Station. Walk 15 minutes to the city center.

Most of the area is walkable. A shuttle bus runs between the two scenic areas. Boats ply the waterways. Tricyle taxis are commonplace.

The West Scenic Area contains a variety of accommodation options, from high-end options to guesthouses to a youth hostel . These are all centrally managed, and reservations are taken in the West Scenic Area's visitor center near the ticket window. Visitors staying within the West Scenic Area have to pay admission to access their hotel, but can apply for a pass that allows them to enter and leave the Scenic Area freely until checkout.
