Table of contents moved[edit]

Based on some complaints about the huge amount of white space in articles, I moved the table of contents from the "content area" to the left navigation bar. This lets the text flow a little more naturally, and I think people naturally turn to that left column for navigating a page, so it works nicely for people.

It's got its downsides, too; the Wikitravel:Travellers' pub's ToC scrolls for several pages on my computer. I'm going to see if I can get it to auto-shrink like the old ToC. Also, right now it's above the navigation box, which means that the nav box moves up and down on different pages. If you're bouncing on "Random page", that can be kind of annoying.

Feedback welcome. I'm most interested in moving it below "navigation", but I can also see an argument for keeping the most specific menu at the top of the navbar. --Evan 21:45, 5 June 2006 (EDT)

Inputbox extension installed[edit]

I've installed the Inputbox extension, which allows some limited HTML forms for searching and creating new pages and page sections. I'm particularly interested in using it to make administrative pages like Wikitravel:Votes for deletion, Wikitravel:Travellers' pub, and Wikitravel:Bug reports. I think if we're careful it could be useful for getting users to create a new page with a template. --Evan 13:19, 6 June 2006 (EDT)

Is this something we can use directly? I mean, the two biggest uses for this that I can see are the ability to insert templates into new pages and additional fields into the upload page, but I don't think you want us admins to nuke your cache umpteen times while we twiddle with the syntax and appearance of Special: pages. 10K Party[edit]

We're closing in on 10,000 articles on en: very fast. What should we do to celebrate? --Evan 18:59, 6 June 2006 (EDT)

Give you and Maj a raise? (How's that for sucking up?) OldPine 19:09, 6 June 2006 (EDT)
OK, OK, it was a joke. (Bad one, in view of the community focus.) Though I do think you guys do a great job.

Worth a mention on the front page. Is there a graph of the growth, or could one be made? OldPine 19:21, 6 June 2006 (EDT)

It was a good joke, don't worry. B-) I was thinking more something to mark the occasion. It's the first time we've crossed a power-of-ten boundary in 2-1/2 years. --Evan 19:32, 6 June 2006 (EDT)
You mean like a wild party where we all simultaneously edit a workspace? ;p OldPine 20:11, 6 June 2006 (EDT)
I was thinking we could have a traditional Wikitravel sports event starting with a hearty edit war where all instances of "traveler" are changed to "traveller" and back a few times, continue with a rousing flamefest about whether links should be underlined or colored and why supporting the wrong option means you're a community-destroying sellout Nazi, and then Willy can sing us a charming song he's composed about Wikitravel's mom and finish by using a bot to paste it into all 10K articles.
Slightly more seriously, most Wikipedia versions seem to celebrate the Big 10K by putting out a press release. Not quite as exciting, I'm afraid, but potentially more useful. Jpatokal 21:21, 6 June 2006 (EDT)
