I want to float an idea I've been thinking about with respect to photo galleries for Wikitravel. We have some spartan rules for including photos on a destination guide (see Wikitravel:Image policy), which I still think is a good idea. Printed guides should concentrate more on the written, practical information.

But, for Web readers, there may be some value in having more photos -- maybe even lots of photos -- on a separate page from the destination page. Photographs convey more of the spirit and excitement of a destination than prose does.

My idea here is that a destination guide for Juneau would link (possibly automatically) to a page that uses the MediaWiki gallery feature to show lots of images of Juneau. We could have that page be in a new namespace, like Gallery:Juneau or Photos:Juneau.

We might also want to start having per-user galleries ("my latest trips"), either in the same namespace, or in a new namespace like User photos:Evan.

The idea here is to rev up the visual appeal of, and keep from choking off contributions by photographers.

I'm neutral on this — as an amateur photographer I like the idea, but it has the potential to generate lots of painful admin work. However, I think that before we start making it easier to upload oodles of pictures, it's essential to get the "Wikitravel Commons" thing for inter-language sharing sorted out (or work out a deal with the Wikimedia Commons folks, which would be even more sensible). The 100k image size limit has also got to go. Jpatokal 11:34, 4 Oct 2005 (EDT)
Maybe we can have size limits for the in-guide images, and no limit for the galleries? But, yes, agreed on the Wikitravel Commons idea. --Evan 11:51, 4 Oct 2005 (EDT)
Ya know, since we're talking about a web only feature, why not add an Interwiki link for sending tags to Flickr. As far as I can tell they are about as open as DMOZ in many respects especially since they make it easy for users to license their images under one of the CC's licenses. Sure, we'd be handing mindshare to a commercial organization, but as I've noted many many times that's what we do, eg. the hotels we recommend are commercial. -- Mark 12:07, 30 Oct 2005 (EST)

I saw this Frapper tool today, which does some group-to-map stuff. I created a Wikitravel Frapper group, which may or may not be interesting. Check it out if you'd like. --Evan 11:50, 4 Oct 2005 (EDT)
