Wikitravel in Yomiuri Shimbun[edit]

Today's Yomiuri Shimbun (English ed.) has an article on "crowdsourcing" and mentions Wikitravel, "a free, up-to-date, and reliable worldwide travel guide authored by spirited amateurs" as a competitive threat to a poor travel writer. Jpatokal 00:02, 17 October 2006 (EDT)

I think it's a really interesting article, but I think that the subject requires a little more creative coverage. Computer programmers have survived and thrived in an Open Source environment; I think it's possible for travel writers and photographers to do the same. Open Content changes the market, but it doesn't eliminate it. I wonder: should we start a Wikitravel:Travel Writers Expedition to interface with professional and semi-professional travel writers and photographers? --Evan 12:37, 17 October 2006 (EDT)

MediaWiki upgrade[edit]

Wikitravel's MediaWiki installation has been upgraded to version 1.8.2. The upgrade required about 10 seconds of downtime, and shouldn't have been noticeable to most users. More information at shared:Wikitravel Shared:17 October 2006. --Evan 16:48, 17 October 2006 (EDT)
