This is a walking itinerary for Washington, D.C. that will take you from the Washington National Cathedral to the Memorials on the National Mall.
Wear comfortable shoes as you will be walking over 6 miles, but almost all of it will be downhill.
Start your day by taking the Metro Red train towards Shady Grove, getting off at the Cleveland Park station. Walk one mile to the Washington National Cathedral.
Register in advance for a tour of the Washington National Cathedral.  Tours range in price from $10 to $40, depending on the type. Tours offered include Highlights, Behind the Scene, Gargoyles, Up Close Tour, and others. While waiting for your tour to start walk through the beautiful Bishop's Garden.
Head south one mile down Wisconsin Avenue and stop for lunch at Spring & Sprout, a Vietnamese restaurant.  Menu includes pho and banh mi.
Continue south another half a mile down Wisconsin Avenue, then turn onto R Street and stop at Dumbarton Oaks.  The main attraction is the gardens, but they are only open from 2:00-6:00 (2:00-5:00 in the winter). While you wait for the gardens to open, go check out the free museum, which is open from 11:30-5:30, Tuesday-Sunday. The museum has a collection of Byzantine and Pre-Columbian art work. Visit the gardens at 2:00. Admission to the gardens is $8 (but free in winter). Plan to spend a couple hours relaxing in the gardens.
Return to Wisconsin Avenue and head south a couple blocks to Q Street and stop at Dolcezza for some tasty gelato. 
Walk east down Q Street for one mile until you reach 21st Street. Stop at The Phillips Collection, an intimate modern art museum.  On the first Thursday of each month the museum holds a special themed event in the evening called Phillips after 5. Admission is $12 and tickets can be purchased in advanced.
Go half a mile south on 21st Street and then merge onto New Hampshire Avenue and stop for dinner at Rasika, a modern Indian restaurant.  They are very popular, so be sure to call a couple weeks in advance to get a reservation at your prefered time. The spinach appetizer, palak chaat, is a must have.
Head south down New Hampshire Avenue through Washington Park Circle then south a mile on 23rd Street until you reach the Lincoln Memorial.  From there walk to the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial.  Stroll around the tidal basin and end your night at the Jefferson Memorial.  The memorials are wonderful at night.
From the Thomas Jefferson Memorial, walk to the Smithsonian Metro Station.
