Mombacho Volcano Natural Reserve is near the city of Granada (Nicaragua). Granada

Understand[edit]

Mombacho is a stratovolcano. Last eruption was in 1577 and while not active it is technically not extinct. There are many steam vents that are accessible at the top.

History[edit]

Landscape[edit]

Rises from about 200 meters at the base to some 1344 meters at the top.

Flora and fauna[edit]

The flora varies with elevation. Lower elevations have typical dry tropical forest underlain by coffee in most areas. Higher up the flora changes gradually until at the top you will find a true cloud forest.

Climate[edit]

Temperature drops with altitude and mid way up is typically 10 F cooler than Granada. Generally nice and cool at the top.

Get in[edit]

South on the highway from Granada to Rivas/SJDS, or from Managua towards Masaya....the intersection of the Granada and Masaya routes is Guanacaste, which is also where the entrance road to the park is. Up the hill about 2 kms. to the office. You can walk or drive about half way up in your own vehicle...to the coffee finca and then take a park truck the rest of the way to the top (fee). Or you can go all the way to the top on foot. From the main road you can walk or take a moto which you will find waiting at the bottom.

Fees/Permits[edit]

There are entrance fees. Varies by how far up you go, if you use their transport, age, etc. look at the park website for specifics.

Get around[edit]

Hike or ride to the top. Park service has transportation for a fee.

Lodging[edit]

Mombacho Lodge about half way to the top offers private cabins with amenities and a restaurant for guests. 50584991029[http://www.mombacholodge.com

Camping[edit]

Not much info about this...contact the park service. Camping just anywhere is not a good idea. Park will chase you off, or you will be on private property

Backcountry[edit]

Plenty of trails, from easy to tough. Not well identified trailheads into them. But on the right ones, the scenery is outstanding as is the flora. Most are on the Park routes at or near the top. Mombacho lodge has many trails and allows non-guests to use them ...check at the Lodge office.

Stay safe[edit]

Hikers use common sense precautions. Let somebody reliable know where you are going and somebody on when to expect you back. While this is not primitive "wilderness" you can get disoriented easily and can go a long time without seeing anybody. Water is not generally available on the trails.
