Vipava is located in the upper part of Vipava Valley. It developed around several springs of Vipava river, some time in Middle ages. Location is at the foot of the Nanos plateau, with a ruined 'old castle' on a promontory above the town. In the town itself, there is a recently renovated Lanthieri palace and remnants of another castle close to the bridge where Vipava river leaves the town.Nowadays Vipava is the center of Upper Vipava valley with the School of viticulture and enology (part of University of Nova Gorica), a secondary school, several shops, a post office and several restaurants. Vipava region is most famous for its wines and there is a large cooperative wine cellar in the town.Local wine varieties are 'zelen', 'pinela' and 'klarnica'.
Vipava is on a highway connecting Postojna with East Italy (Gorizia). It can be reached by car from Ljubljana in about 1 hour, from Postojna in about 20 min and from Slovenian coast in about 45 min (Koper). There are several daily buses from Ljubljana via Postojna. It can also easily be reached from Nova Gorica (about 25 min by car).
