Villarrica del Espiritu Santo more commonly know as simply Villarrica, is in Paraná Plateau Region of Paraguay.

The name Villarrica ("rich town") refers to the place of its original foundation, where it is believed there were mines of gold and silver. Espiritu Santo ("Holy Spirit") refers to the date it was founded, in the Pentecost. It was originally founded in today's Brasil, where its ruins can still be seen in the Parana State. Due to the pressure of the Bandeirantes, its location moved, and moved up to 7 times before settling in 1683 in its current location. It is considered the Paraguayan City of Culture.
