Hello! Welcome to Wikitravel. Please take a sec to look at our copyleft and policies and guidelines, but feel free to plunge forward and edit some pages. Scanning the Manual of style, especially the article templates, can give you a good idea of how we like articles formatted. If you need help, check out Wikitravel:Help, and if you need some info not on there, post a message in the travellers' pub. -- 13:49, 9 Aug 2004 (EDT)

Well done on the modifications to the Iraq pages. I read the versions the wrong way around and thought you were working for the Republicans!! -- KBullett 15:23, 14 Sep 2004 (GMT)

Wow. You actually have a more restrictive copyright law in Denmark than the U.S. does in this one regard. Usually a photos of a public artwork are completely legit. Anyhow, I figured you were right so I executed the deletion, I just didn't quite understand how that could be. -- Mark 16:57, 17 Sep 2004 (EDT)

In Canada?[edit]

I note your 2005 pictures from Nova Scotia. Are you in Canada right now? Make sure to send some email if you're going to be coming through Montreal. --Evan 13:51, 24 Jun 2005 (EDT)

Single column Wikitravel style for your Yopy[edit]

Hey Elgaard,

I've put some time into coming up with a single column style primarily for your PDA. Would you mind giving it a look. Just go the the usual place and select "one-column" under Styles.

I used to have a Zaurus myself so I think I've got a clue as to what you're looking for (how wide is the Yopi screen?). It seemed to me that having the right column at all would be a waste on a PDA, so I've collapsed the nav into a menu bar at the top. Try increasing and decreasing the font size by the way. Oh yeah, as usual it's only meant for Mozilla/Firefox etc.

The single column of text and images will squeeze down to the width of the Mediawiki icon (about one word across). Unfortunately the menubar does cause a scrollbar to appear if you sqeeze the column down at all; I haven't yet found a solution for that.

-- Mark 11:05, 29 Sep 2005 (EDT)

The resolution is 240x320. The browser if Dillo. Dillo runs on many platforms. It only do very simple CSS so far and no javaScript. --elgaard 15:27, 29 Sep 2005 (EDT)

A possible solution[edit]

So I think I've found a solution for problem of floating vs. fixed-width for the new skin. Check it out. I've added a toggle switch in the upper right corner. The default is still fixed-width, but the switch sets a 1-year cookie, and should be persistant across sessions so you should only have to ever click it once (until you switch stylesheets). -- Mark 00:41, 7 Oct 2005 (EDT)

Yes, I like it. Of course I would like the other default, but either way I am happy. And it should be trivial to reverse if we get problems. The cookie is fine. I would also like to be able to set it in my user preferences (like skins are set now) as I use many different computers. --elgaard 05:04, 7 Oct 2005 (EDT)
Unfortunately Cache404 takes the skin preference out of the realm of user preferences, which is part of the point of this whole exercise. I'd like to be able to set the skin in the user pref as well, but it just doesn't work. -- Mark 05:20, 7 Oct 2005 (EDT)

Hi, Sorry to bother you, would you consider uploading your image "Image:PalermoGesu.jpg" to the Wikipedia commons with an appropriate copyright tag, as I would really love to use it for an article I am writing here [1]. If you don't want to - no problems, but it's a great photo and would help define 17th century Sicilian architecture very well. You can find me here [2] Thanks - Giacomo

That is really kind of you, thanks very much indeed. Yes, I wll put something at Palermo there also, (it may be a week or so, and could you check my English grammar - it's dodgy!) Its a great photo, you may be intersted to know that the photos in my article (I can say this as I have taken none of them) are better than those in the only authorative work {Anthony Blunt) on the subject 14:46, 18 Oct 2005 (EDT)

Administrator nomination[edit]

I just told User:Ilkirk that I'd like to nominate him as an admin, which reminded me that I've been wanting to ask you to join that team for some time. I know you're on the road a lot of the time, but would you be amenable to taking on an admin role? --Evan 20:41, 28 Oct 2005 (EDT)

I am in Brampton now but I am still online. Yes, I would accept a nomination. --elgaard 11:47, 29 Oct 2005 (EDT)
Great! Seems like it was unanimous, so welcome to the team. --Evan 12:35, 15 Nov 2005 (EST)

I've got a proposal for a bot to do the cleanup work on breadcrumb navigation here: Wikitravel:Script nominations#YggdrasilBot. Your comment welcome, please. --Evan 00:02, 11 Dec 2005 (EST)

Elgaard, I came across an entry you wrote about leaving brochures in hostels. I like this idea and should you and the rest of the admins try to get this off the ground I'd like to offer my services. I have an extensive contact list of hostels, hotels, tourist centers in the States and Europe, which we could send these brochures to. Sapphire 17:18, 4 Jan 2006 (EST)

Where in the world is Charlottenlund[edit]

I assume - Charlottenlund is in Denmark. - To save me, and others, guessing in the future it would be nice if the first thing one reads on the page of a new article is a statement like this. Not everyone knows where every place in the world is located, so a few hints would be nice. -- Huttite 07:07, 11 Jan 2006 (EST)

Hi, I undid a recent revert you did to NYC [3]. It looks like you clicked rollback in error, but I thought I'd check in with you just in case you meant to do that. The hotel guide in question is, as far as I can tell, not a primary source for any of the hotels. The guide was added to a great many pages, which further implies its lack of primaryness. Thanks. -- Colin 20:53, 31 Jan 2006 (EST)

Hey! Are you up in Leysin this week? We're going to come up for the weekend. -- Mark 01:55, 1 Feb 2006 (EST)

Hi, Niels,

Are you back from Italy already? I've been reading Wikitravel's articles on southern Italy and noticed that you've made a lot of edits there. I wonder how you moved around the region (by bus, train, car?). I am planning to go for 3 or 4 days in June and visit Alberobello and Lecce, and Matera in Basilicata. I'll be travelling independently (not on an organized tour or anything) and on a budget too tight to rent a car, so I was thinking about settling in Bari for a few days and visiting those places in day trips from there. Do you think this could a good idea? Thanks a lot for your time, Ricardo (Rmx) 22:04, 25 March 2006 (EST)

I was in Italy for two weeks last summer. I travelled with my (now) wife by bus and train (and ferry to Sicily). We were flying into Rome and out from Naples. It sound good, but check the train-schedule, there is not many trains so day trips may not be possible. And do consider staying in Alberobello. --elgaard 22:47, 25 March 2006 (EST)

Wikitravel Shared[edit]

Hi Niels - I'm not sure if you're familiar with Wikitravel shared, but if not you can now upload your images there and they will be available to all language versions of Wikitravel instead of just English Wikitravel. See Wikitravel:Image policy#Wikitravel Shared for details. -- Ryan 16:49, 24 July 2006 (EDT)

Editing accident?[edit]

I assume that this was an editing accident. If it was deliberate, let us know. -- Colin 11:44, 25 August 2006 (EDT)

Thank you. I do not know what happened. Probably a sensitive mousepad problem. --elgaard 04:32, 28 August 2006 (EDT)

Hej! Sorry not to have said it earlier -- we're just getting settled after returning from our trip last week, but thanks a ton for being an excellent host! We really enjoyed the break from hotels & you know some great restaurants for visitors! Let us know, of course, if you'll ever be in our neck of the woods. Otherwise, maybe see you at the meet up? Maj 20:40, 10 September 2006 (EDT)

Hi, Elgaard. So, you probably saw the new recent changes patrol feature. It's working out pretty nice. If you want, you can set your preferences so your own edits are automatically marked as "patrolled". It saves you a couple of clicks. It's on the "edit" tab in your preferences. -- Andrew H. Paper travel guides[edit]

Hi, Elgaard. Thanks for your contribution to User:DenisYurkin/Paper travel guides. I've left a question on the talk page there--could you please say something there? :-) Thanks. --DenisYurkin 12:20, 5 February 2007 (EST)

removal of BestWestern details in Athens[edit]

Elgaard, I left a question in Talk:Athens#removal of details on BestWestern chain related to your revert of my info on BestWestern. Could you please leave some comment there? Thank you. --DenisYurkin 05:07, 11 February 2007 (EST)

Hey Elgaard...

Merging in Copenhagen[edit]

Hey Elgaard, kunne du ikke engang ved lejlighed lige kikke forbi Københavns talk side, og komme med en kommentar?

COTM - Copenhagen[edit]

Hey Niels, please take a look over at the Collaboration of Month Nomination page, and the Copenhagen entry. Also I'd really like some comments whether you'd be willing (and able) to help with lending a hand, since you're the other long time contributor with a intimate knowledge of Copenhagen. Kind regards - Sertmann 17:38, 6 November 2008 (EST)

--Stefan (sertmann) Talk 18:04, 24 February 2009 (EST)

Brussels picture[edit]

I saw the picture of skylines in Brussels, and I'm asking myself where you took that picture. Could you tell me from which building you took it?

Thank you very much

Not from a building. It was from a hot air balloon on a cable. elgaard 17:53, 16 June 2010 (EDT)
