Kandawmin Garden Mausoleum[edit]

I'm going to talk about the Kandawmin Garden which is near Shwe Dagon Pagoda.


The Kandawmin Garden Mausoleum is located near the southern gate of Shwe Dagon Pagoda, on the Shwe Dagon Pagoda Road, Yangon, Myanmar.


The Kandawmin Garden Mausoleum is one of the historical place in Yagon. It comprise a mausoleum complex and contains four mausolea of Burmese national figures. The mausoleum of Supayalat, the mausoleum of Thakin Kodaw Hmaing, the mausoleum of U Thant, and the mausoleum of General Aung San's wife Daw Khin Kyi are in this garden.

Supayalat Mausoleum[edit]

Supayalat is known as the queen consort of the last king of Myanmar, Thibaw Min. The King and the Queen was sent into exile in India in 1885 after losing the third Invasion of British Colony. The King passed away in India and Supayalat was allowed to return Yangon in 1919. She died in 1925 before her 66th birthday. The royal family wanted to bring her dead body to Mandalay Palace to bury but the colonial government denied it. The royal family buried her in Kandawmin Garden and held her funeral.

Thakhin Kodaw Hmaing Mausoleum[edit]

Thakhin Kodaw Hmaing is one of the greatest and famous writers, ports and political leaders. He died on 23rd July 1964 and his mausoleum was built near the Queen’s one.

The Mausoleum of U Thant[edit]

U Thant is the former Secretary-General of United Nations. U Thant died on 25 November 1974 in New York and brought his body back to Yangon. The government in that time ordered to bury his body in Kyan Daw Cemetery. The university students argued it and had a conflict with Government. It is also known as U Thant funeral crisis. He was buried in Kandawmin Garden.

The Mausoleum of Daw Khin Kyi[edit]

The mausoleum of Daw Khin Kyi, wife of General Aung San, mother of Daw Aung San Su Kyi, is also located in Kandawmin Garden. Daw Khin Kyi was the first woman ambassador to India.
