My name is Kenny Ellwanger, I'm originally from Rochester, NY. I retired from Kodak in 2005 and shortly thereafter moved to Cape Canaveral, Florida. I went with a church group to Nicaragua to build a new church building in Las Salinas, Nicaragua in 2007. I returned twice more and finally moved to the city of Estelí in the north central mountains of Nicaragua where the air is cooler than the hot Pacific costal cities. In my life I have traveled to Canada, Italy, France, Spain, North Africa, Panama, Costa Rica and many states in the USA. So far, I like Nicaragua best for three principle reasons: first, the people here are very friendly and easy to sit down and have a casual conversation with. And second, It is very economical to live here. I recently sold my car back in the USA and do a lot more healthy walking. Also, taxis are plentiful and inexpensive and buses run about 10 minutes apart or less during the day. And third, and best of all, is the very pleasant climate here in the mountains. I have been studying Spanish for several years and have just graduated from the survival mode to the almost fluent mode. But I still have great difficulty understanding people when they are talking to me. Now, I volunteer at an ecological project as a general all-around handy man and I teach a little English using the Internet as my source. I attend a nice little church and Bible study. It has been difficult and very rewarding to fit into of a foreign culture. The rewarding part is the all new friends I have made.
