Udupi is a district in Karnataka State.

The district is famous for Udupi cuisine ( Vegetarian ) worldwide through Udipi hotels. Also few banks were established in pre independence era of India (Bharat) in this district. Many educational institutes located in around Udupi and Manipal. The Udupi distict has several cashew nut processing factories, some roof tile ( clay ) making factories. There is an underground cavern for storing petroleum crude at Padoor ( Padur ) in this district.

By Road:- Udupi district at present connected by two national highways of India NH-66 ( Mumbai - Kochi) and NH -169 ( Mangalore - Shivamogga ) and also NH-169A ( Malpe - Agumbe) in which only mini buses and mini lorries are allowed. There are many Karnataka state highways ( SH )which connect to other districts of Karnataka state. Main District Roads ( MDR ) criss cross to connect small towns and villages of Udupi district. There also several paved roads which are maintained by Panchayat's and Municipalties in the district.

By Air:- Mangalore International Airport ( VOML / IXE ) is the nearest aerodrome to Udupi district. It is at approximate distance of sixty kilometres.

By Sea:- New Mangalore Port ( NMPT ) is a major sea port on west coast of India. The port is at Panambooru which is fifty kilometre from Udupi town. There are fishing harbours at Malpe, Hangarakatta and Gangolli in the district.

By Train:- There is railway connectivity to Udupi district by Konkan railway line. Konkan railway line runs between cities of Mumbai to Surathkal near Mangalore Major railway stations are Udupi, Kundapura, Byndoor and Barkur. There are several express, Rajadhani trains which stops at Udupi. Udupi is also connected to Bengaluru by Bengaluru ( Yeshavantpura ) to Karwar express trains.

Private buses run through out the district at fixed time and in fixed routes ( stage carriage ). Three wheelers (Auto rickshaw ) and private cars are available for hire. Now government undertaking KSRTC also runs few buses to some destinations within the Udupi district.

  • Udupi district has many temples. Famous ones are Krishna Temple in Udupi, Vigneeshwara Temple at Anegudde ( 26 km from Udupi), Mookambika Temple at Kolluru ( 59 km from Udupi, 26 km from Coondapur), Vinayaka temple at Hattiyangadi ( 9 km from Kundapura,) Mandarthi Temple, Kamalashile Temple, Shankarnarayana Temple, Subramanya temple at Neelavara, Hoovinakere, Kundeshwara at Kundapura.
  • There are many famous beaches along Udupi district coast. Mainly, Kaup Beach, Malpe beach, Kodi beach, Maravanthe beach ( Padukone native place of actress Deepika Padukone is nearby ). St Mary's Island is around 10 km from Malpe, which is an excellent picnic spot.

  • Visit Pajaka kshetra near Udupi town which is the birth place of Jagadguru Shri Madhwa Acharya , Hindu philosopher who propagated Dwaita philosophy.
  • Visit Barkur or Barkoor which was ancient capital of Tulunad kings or Tuluva dynasty. Barkur is at distance of Fifteen Kilometres from Udupi town. Ruins of Tulunadu kingdom can be seen here.
  • Camp at Sitanadi nature camp run by Forest Department ( Aranya Elake ) of Karnataka. Trek to Kudlu waterfalls near to Sitanadi nature camp. The camp is located on NH-169A on Udupi to Agumbe road near Hebri. The camp is part of Someshwara Wildlife Sanctuary.
  • Trekking to Kodachadri peak from Kollur which is a famous temple town in Udupi district.
  • River cruising available at some places.
  • Ride through Balebare or Hulikal ghat during monsoon ( June to September ) season when it will be very scenic and green. The route to be taken is Siddapura, Hosangadi, Balebare ( Hulikal ), Yadur or Nagara.
  • Ride from Sitanadi near Hebri to Bachappu, Kabbinale ( Konkanarabettu ),Ajekar, Karkala to enjoy lush green canopy of trees.

  • Virgin Coconut oil available at local Coconut oil mills
  • Saaru ( Rasam ) powder, Sambhar powder and powders of various spices the essence of Udupi cuisine at shops at Udupi town.
  • Sweets like Banana Halva, Wheat Halwa, Kashi Halva, Different types of Unde ( Laddu ). Kharakaddi, Kodubele, Banana chips, Chakkuli and Mixture are special fried snacks of this region.
  • Sandige and Happala ( Pappad ) made from Blackgram ( Uddu ), Jackfruit ( Gujje or Kujje ), Sweet potato( Kelang), Horsegram ( Kudu ), Rice ( Ari ).
  • Idols or altars of Hindu gods and deities made from Gold, Silver, Copper, Brass , Bronze etc. Items required for Puja/Homa/Japa/Havan as per Hindu customs,traditions and rituals.
  • Some religious texts and books related Madhva or Dvaita Siddanta ( Dwaita philosophy ).

  • Shree Krishna matha's Bhojana shale for free authentic Udupi meal. Timing must be confirmed at Krishna matha.
  • Woodlands Vegetarian restaurant. Lipsmacking Masala dosa, Puri Kurma.
  • Mitra Samaja for authentic Udupi cuisine dishes.

  • Several Hindu temples at Annegudde, Kollur serve free vegetarian lunch to devotees.

  • Tender Coconut Water ( Bonda ) widely available at road side shops and carts.
  • Kashaya a concoction of herbs and food grains with water or cow's milk available at select outlets.

Stay safe[edit]

Stay away from waterfalls during rainy seasons as heavy gushing of water can be dangerous to life. Also most waterfalls have rocks at bottom which are slippery . Do not swim or go far away from sea shore at beaches. Before going into reserved forest take permission from the local range officer of Karnataka forest department. Carry torch ( flash light ), water, eatables ( food ),whistle,first aid box,lighter, clothes and other essential things before entering or camping in the forests. There are highly venomous snakes in the forests and adjoining areas of Udupi district be careful. Some interior roads may be cut off during monsoon season due to floods, water logging, fallen trees and land slides, Be prepared for such eventuality. Mobile ( Cellular ) phone signals are not available at some rural areas of the district. B.S.N.L mobile service has wide spread network in Udupi district.
