Uaxactún is in Peten of Guatemala.

Uaxactún was under the control of Tikal. It is a smaller ruin. There is a modern village on the site, which used to deal in chiclero.

Flora and fauna[edit]

This is north of Tikal Park, but much of the road between it is in the park itself and the rest looks undeveloped away from town.

Get in[edit]

Two buses each day travel from the bus station at Santa Elena via Tikal, departing at 1PM and 3 PM. They arrive in town at 4 and 6 PM, respectively. The first morning return bus leaves at 6 AM. I am not sure of the second departure time.

September 2014 - Bus arrived at Tikal at 4pm (was actually about 20minutes late) and cost 15Q.

The official entry fee is 50Q, effective July 2007. (Still true in September 1014)

Get around[edit]

See[edit][add listing]

Main portions of the Uaxactun ruins are on either side of the airfield.

Group A and B on the North West side of town are well signed and almost totally exposed from the jungle.

Group E to the South East is also exposed and signed.

Group F and H are poorly signed and have not been excavated, I spent about an hour trying to find them before I realised they were totally buried. Not much to except unusual outcrop of hills in the jungle, give the impression of how they would have appeared to early explorers.

Do[edit][add listing]

Visit the ceramics museum at Campamenhto El Chiclero.

Buy[edit][add listing]

Map - 25Q Map shows the town and locations of all the ruins, as well as providing information about both ancient and modern Uaxactun. If you are only interested in the map, a sign featuring it can be foudn at the entrance to town but it lacks all the other data. The map doesn't show all roads and trails around town some navigating can, at time be confusing especially when looking for Groups F and H

Eat[edit][add listing]

El Chiclero has a restaurant, where the food is very good and there is a comedor in town. which we did not have time to try. (was not open during September 2014)

Comedor Uaxactun In the middle of town, served chicken, rice and salsa for 35Q, very tasty Gallo Beer for 10Q

Comedor Imperial At the entrance to the town, served turkey with rice and a broth of turkey with some veges for 25Q, small serving and less tasty than Comedor Uaxactun Water 5Q, also served coffee which I did not have.

Drink[edit][add listing]

Good luck getting anything but Gallo beer.

El Chiclero and Posada Aldana are the places to stay in town. There looked to be another near the furthest southern end as we entered and rode by in the bus.

Tienda y Hispedaje Eben-Ezer - 50Q per night, owner is very helpful and friendly but was not particularly clean. Does have a tower to sit in which has a nice view across the town.

People can camp at El Chiclero.
