Than Taung Gyi
Than Taung Gyi is located in the Kayin State,Myanmar.
Than Daung Gyi or Than Taung Gyi is a small resort town in the Kayin State. Actually, Than Taung (Iron Hill) is divided into two towns which are old Than Taung (Than Taung Myo Haung - the original town on the hill) and new Than Taung (Than Taung Myo Thit). Than Taung is located between Bago Division and Kayin State. It was developed as a hill resort from Victorian times by the British. Than Taung Gyi also has a romantic legend. According to legend, Naw Buu Baw prayer mountain in Than Taung gyi is haunted by the spirits of Naw Buu Baw princess and her husband Saw Thaw Oh Khwa.
Than Taung Gyi has very beautiful atmosphere in summer and winter. The Karen people are very friendly and lovely. In other words, Than Taung Gyi is a nature-based eco-tourism site. And Naw Buu Baw prayer mountain is one of the biggest Christian Crosses in Myanmar.Getting to the Than Taung is not as easy as reaching to the famous destinations like Bagan or Inle lake.
Nowadays, people want to escape from the urban life because of their work stress. Green area is the most suitable to reduce the stress. In Than taung gyi, there are a few people and weather is very beautiful and you can also see numerous birds and hear the calls of wild animals in the life of nature. In addition, there are also man-made scenerioes around Than Taung. They are the pleasant groves of tea and coffee plantations on some of the slopes around Than Taung. The places you can go around there are Naw Buu Baw mountain, Bayintnaung Tat, hot spring, waterfall and Kayin villages. One of the unique and strange facts is that people from there sell their products with cycle or at only their house.
Most people who go to the Than Taung want to feel the real natural life. So, at Than Taung, you can see the sunrise and sunset from the top of Naw Buu Baw prayer mountain. Than Taung Gyi is overlooked by Naw Bu Baw Prayer mountain. That area is the important religious place for the Karen Christians. You can also visit a old Roman Catholic Church on the Mount Naw Buu Baw. To reach to the top, you have to go with light truck and climb about 374 stairs and lined with small chapels (including one shaped like two giant hands calpsed in prayer) along the way. When you get to the top of the mountain, the view can even hold our breath and is worth enough for tiredness. The travelers should take photos for memorialize moment. You can take a number of walks in that area including the tea plantations. You can challenge full day hiking to the waterfall and hot spring at Taw Pyar Gyi. When you go back, you can stop at Pathi stream and take a swim.
You can buy the Karen traditional food, Karen products, honey, mushroom, gold bananas (shwe nga pyaw),coffee and tea leaves.
The main food you can have there is the Kayin traditional food such as bamboo shoots, fried tofu and spicy fish sauce and Myanmar traditional food. You can also get coffee and tea leaf easily.
In Than Taung Gyi, there does not have a lot of hotels. The most popular accommodations around Than Taung Gyi are guest houses and B&Bs (bed and breakfast).In the peak season, you need to book in advance. There is also a resort near Than Taung Gyi. The name of the resort is Shwe Than Daung which is situated in New Than Daung.
When you come back from Than Taung Gyi, you can visit around Taungoo which was once the capital of huge empire(Kaytumadi). In the west part of Taungoo, the Royal Lake (Kan Daw Gyi) which is a picturesque spot is lying. Next place that we can visit around Taungoo is Shwe San Daw Pagoda. Shwe San Daw Pagoda is the famous religious site of Taungoo. You can also visit to Phoe Kyar elephant camp. Phoe Kyar elephant camp in the Bago Yoma forest was once the timber production camp and after government reduced timber production to conserve the forest so it became the tourism site nowadays.
