Etymology question[edit]

Are we sure the name means place of the Jackal? "D'hibou" is French for 'of the owl'

Hello! You are perfectly right. However, since the French name of the city was "Port-Etienne", it's likely that this "hibou" thing comes from a local dialect rather than French language, despite it looks French... How is it pronounced, "nouad-dibou" or more "nouathibou"? 'Dh' being the transliteration of a particular letter in Arabic alphabet. PierrB (talk) 05:30, 14 January 2014 (EST)
