why is the pronounciation transcription based on english? Does one have to know this odd way of transcription to read the phrases? Why is it not IPA? as most intl. dictionaries? Why is it so anglo/americanocentric making it difficult for intl users?

The pronunciation is based in English because this is an English Wikitravel where the users use English to communicate. Please have a look at the phrasebooks on other Wikitravels- Finish, Japanese and Swedish an you will notice that the pronunciation should be based on local language. I hope this answers your question. Are you planning on working on Latvian phrasebook? That would be great! Warm regards, IBAlex (talk) 19:45, 29 July 2013 (EDT)
This is a superbly bad idea since unlike those languages English is internationally spoken, meaning that pronounciation varies in different vatiants of it and it's hard to figure out for people who are not native speakers, but might try using this guide (and considering many contributors might also be non-natives from country in question also hard to correctly convey the pronounciation) 11:45, 19 April 2017 (EDT)
