Třeboň is a picturesque little town in South Bohemia. It is home to the Regent brewery and lends its name to the Třeboňsko protected wildlife area. It is a spa town, well-prepared for tourists with information available in various languages including English. It is most known among Czech people as the "hometown of the carp", as the carp fish, traditional Czech Christmas dish, is bred in the ponds around the area.

Třeboň grew with the development of fish farming in the region. The nearby area is filled with very old artifical lakes or fish ponds that are still used today. The nearest is the Svět Fishpond which dates from the 1570's. The Czech Republic's biggest pond, Rožmberk, is located some 6 km from Třeboň.

Buses from Prague leave from Florenc Bus Station or Roztyly metro station and take around 3 hours.

Get around[edit]

The town centre is very concise with the old town square - Masarykovo náměstí - at its centre. It is easy to walk around in the tiny lanes that surround the main square, the chateau, the spa park area, and the Svět pond.

See[edit][add listing]

The old town is home to a large castle/chateau complex and a very pleasant old town square. The Schwarzenberg Tomb just South-East of the town is very impressive. There is also the Regent Brewery which you can visit and which hosts a spacious brewery pub/restaurant.

Do[edit][add listing]

There is a well-marked trail with information boards the forms a loop around the Svet Fishpond. It starts outside the Hotel Bohemia Regent to the South-West of the town centre and is known as the "Around The World" trail. The terain is easy and can be done on foot or on bike. The total distance is 12.5km. It comes back into Trebon past the Schwarzenberg tomb and over the Svet dam itself. Another trail is designed for cyclists and is called "Around Trebon". It is 39km and also has information boards along it. There are also several other tourist trails, the information board at the start of "Around The World" shows where these are although the tourist information will probably be able to point you in the right direction as well.

The tradition of spas in Trebon has come from using a natural healing source – peat. There are rich deposits of peat in the Trebon region bogs. The local peat is rich in iron and sulphur and it is used for the treatment of bones, muscles and joints. First spa - Berta's Spa - was opened in 1883, and it is still popular today.

Buy[edit][add listing]

The old town square is surrounded by interesting small shops that sell local products, such as Třeboňské lázeňské oplatky - the traditional Czech spa thin, round wafers that come in different flavours.

Eat[edit][add listing]

The local specialty is undeniably fish from the nearby ponds. Local restaurants are mostly to be found around the old town square. Perhaps unsurprisingly given the history of the region, fish dishes are numerous and tasty! Carp, trout, perch - many restaurants in the town centre serve the local fish specialties. You can also try the "fish fries", fried carp fries - local snack.

"Šupina a Šupinka" ("The Fish Scale and The Little Fish Scale") is a popular, slightly upscale local freshwater fish restaurant close to the cheateau. However, almost all the pubs and restaurants in the town centre serve local carp or other fish specialties - you can also visit "Bílý jednorožec" (White Unicorn) hotel or the Regent brewery pub.

Drink[edit][add listing]

As anywhere in the Czech Republic, a beer is a ubiquitous beverage. The Regent Brewery, established in 1379, is one of the oldest breweries in the country. Visit the brewery restaurant in the south of the city. They have really good drafted beer and you can also take bottled beer with you if you want. They also offer snacks to eat - do not come there too late, it can be quite full.
