Stony Brook is a hamlet bordering the Long Island Sound located in northern Suffolk County, NY. This historic town is home to The State University of New York at Stony Brook, The Stony Brook School, Three Village School District, and the “Stony Brook Village.”


Get in[edit]

Stony Brook has a station on the Port Jefferson Branch of the Long Island Rail Road. One can go west to New York City (1 1/2 - 2 hours) or east one stop to the final station Port Jefferson (10 - 15 minutes).

Get around[edit]

The university is served by several bus routes. The S60/69 and 3D connect to the Smith Haven Mall, where transfers can be made to other routes. The 3D continues to Brentwood, and the S60 continues to Port Jefferson, Coram, and Gordon Heights. [1]

West Meadow Beach Historic District- West Meadow Beach Road, Stony Brook, NY 11790 | This peninsula of park land is approximately 1.5 miles long and was added to the National Register of Historic Places as a National Historic District on October 28, 2004. Come here to enjoy their long and rocky beaches, or spend your time jogging, hiking, or cycling on the beautiful trails this district has to offer. West Meadow offers public parking near the Town Beach and is open free of charge to Town of Brookhaven Residents. The Long Island Museum of American Art, History, and Carriages- 1200 Route 25A, Stony Brook, NY | (631) 751-0066 | Originally named the Museums at Stony Brook when founded in 1939, this nine acre, open air museum is a perfect place to spend the day with the family. It is known for its large collection of work by William Sidney Mount, as well as its collection of over 200 carriages.
