Southern Illinois is a region in the state of Illinois in the United States of America. It is primarily agricultural, like most of Illinois outside Chicagoland, but includes some attractive, rolling scenery that contrasts with the flatness of Central Illinois to its north.
Southern Illinois was settled by Southerners from Virginia and beyond, who emigrated west along the Ohio River in the early 19th century. And Cairo, IL -- at the southern tip of the state -- is far closer to Memphis and northern Mississippi than it is to Chicagoland. Consequently, the accent here has a distinct southern drawl, in contrast with the flat accents to the north (with eastern European influences by Chicago and the Great Lakes).

Avoid the city of East Saint Louis. This general vicinity has some of the highest violent crime rates in the country. It used to be an industrial town so unemployment here is higher than the national average. Poverty is also rampant. Burned out buildings and houses that are boarded up with plywood is very common. If you have to visit this city, please keep your common sense and wits about you. Avoid any sides streets at all costs! In general, East Saint Louis is a very unsafe small city.
