Shunde (顺德; Shùndé) is a city near Foshan, in Guangdong Province in China.

Shunde is well-known in the Guangdong province as a place with great Chinese food. Its population and economy is starting to grow and its rapid economic growth is mainly due to furniture production while increase in population is due to an influx of workers. With this influx of people seeking work, there has been an increase in popular services like body massage, foot massage and spas.

By air[edit]

The nearest airport is the Guangzhou Baiyun Airport. There is an airport express service that leaves the airport hourly 7AM-6:30PM.

It is possible to take a cruise in from Hong Kong.

The main bus terminal in Shunde is in Daliang District. The Daliang Bus Station has coaches coming in from Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hongkong, Dongguan and also from Guangxi, Jiangsi, Hunan, Henan, Hubei, Jiangsu, Sichuan, Shanghai and other provinces. [2]

A D-Class light rail line connects Shunde to Guangzhou South Railway Station (10 minutes/ 10 yuan) and Zhuhai (1 hour/ 60 yuan). Trains run frequently at peak times, and aproximately once an hour for the rest of the day. To get to the station, ask a taxi driver for "Shùndé qīngguǐ zhàn".

  • Qinghui Garden - The most famous and traditional sightseeing spot in Shunde is Qinghui Garden(清晖园). Located in the old centre of Daliang, it is a gem of southern china gardening history, and is listed as one of the four major gardens in Guangdong Province. Qinghui Garden was firstly built by Mr. Huang Shijun in Ming Dynasty, who was ranked the first in the national exam and become an important officer in central government. After retirement, he moved back to his hometown Shunde and built this garden. However, the current buildings and decorations we see today are mostly left from Qing Dynasty already. As weather in Shunde is very warm, in the garden there are a lot of water spots and decoration, like the dragon fountain or small water fall. You can find also a pavilion in the middle of the garden with eight sides, people inside can open the windows on each side as they want to ensure there is always a breeze when they rest there. Many southern China gardening elements such as stone hills, special shape of windows, veranda, as well as many plants like bamboos, huge Banyan and Longan trees can be seen in this garden. It creates an interesting and harmonized atmosphere in the garden, tourist can have an pleasant time here.
  • Fengjian water town - Fengjian water town is located in Xingtai town, which is around 45 minutes by car towards south from Daliang. It preserves the view of a old village along a small river with stone streets, old people playing Chinese chess under Banyan trees, housewives preparing special fish dishes, children running around and crossing all bridges. On dragon boat festival (around May-June, different date every year), wooden yachts that are hidden in the water will be taken out and decorated, and strong young men (30-40 in a boat) will race along the river. Along the band are crowds of cheering people, who will then later join a feast to end the celebration. This festival is to wish good weather and harvest of the year.
  • Other city park - Shunde is mostly appreciated as a work-life balance town. You can find a lot of well maintained green fields next to residence area, which is simple but open for everyone to enjoy. Among them are the Shunfengshan Park, Guipan River side park and Desheng River side park. Take an easy walk after your nice meal and you will understand why people love it here.

Enjoying a great and relaxing body massage is a must during your visit to Shunde.

Shunde is also famous for their foot massages and washing of feet(沐足), being a lifestyle for many of the locals. Many shops are found in the district of daliang, along gui pan (桂畔路). It is approximately 40-60yuan for a session for an hour.

Another common lifestyle for the locals is washing of hair at salons, 洗头。 Generally every hair salon offer this service, accompanied with a head and neck massage. Costs range from 10-20yuan.

While not generally considered to be in the same league as its neighbours with regards to shopping, with the increase of middle-class individuals, Shunde is seeing an increase in the number of shopping centres.

There is a saying in Shunde '食在广东,厨出风城' which means when you eat in Guangdong, you are actually eating in Shunde, in reference to the many great chefs in Guangdong Province who originated from this small town.

One must-try is the Double-Skin Milk (Shuangpinai双皮奶). It is a famous cantonese dessert that originated in this town. It tastes a bit like custard and can be eaten hot or cold, or mixed with other desserts. Besides double-skin milk, one have to try the other desserts too. A famous dessert shop is ren xin(仁信老铺), which offers a large variety of desserts for individual taste buds.

Having night snack is also a habit of Shunde people. Most popular night snack place include Wenqiao Barbeque (文巧烧烤) in Daliang, and other salty congee places with fresh animal viscera. Enjoy a great night out!

Drinking traditionally begins at dinner and spills over to local bars afterward. KTV (karaoke) is a popular past time, and is as much about the beer as the singing. If beer is not your taste, try the Chinese rice wine...clear and strong!

Stay safe[edit]

Whilst not free from crime, Shunde is generally safer than the bigger cities of Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Dongguan. Nevertheless, it helps to watch out for pickpockets who have been known to work in public buses and other crowded areas. In addition, avoid going out alone at night and wearing flashy clothes and accessories.
