Sinŭiju, also spelled Shinuiju, is a city in North Korea.
Sinuiju lies across the river from Dandong, China, and is connected to it by the Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge. If you're coming by train from China, Sinuiju is the first city you'll see.
It is possible to get within a few hundred feet of Sinuiju by boat from Dandong. Various tour boat operators along the Yalu River surrounding the Friendship Bridge charge ¥20-50.
In wintertime, the river freezes over and locals on both sides trek across the border to trade (or defect). However, the North Korean army regularly patrols the border, and any foreigners caught on the wrong side can expect to be detained and accused of spying.
- During the organized tour, you will have three chances to shop: immediately after the first museum tour in the morning, immediately after lunch and immediately after the second museum tour in the afternoon.Products available for purchase include cosmetics, cigarettes, candy, traditional clothing and beer, but that must be requested during the lunchtime shopping. Traditional Korean alcohols are also available for purchase. There doesn't seem to be much in the way of export restrictions for foreign tourists but remember to ask - just in case. There are no ATM's in Sinuiju, nor do they accept credit cards. All prices are are quoted in Chinese RMB.
- Lunch is provided during the tour. Meat is conspicuous by its absence but the meal is otherwise tasty. You will also have an opportunity to sing karaoke.
- Taedong River beer will be served during lunch. Extra bottles for take away are available for sale upon request for about 7 RMB per 600ml bottle.
