Shimoga is a district in Karnataka State, India.
Shimoga district has two distinct geographical features one western ghats ( called Malenadu in Kannada ) and its evergreen forests, Another rain shadow region along eastern side of western ghats known as Bayaluseemae in local Kannada language or plains. The Shivamogga district is rich in flora and fauna because of Malenadu. The district has many spectacular waterfalls which come to their splendour glory during rainy ( monsoon ) season in the months of June, July and August.
Kannada is local language and is mostly spoken by all. English is understood by mostly urban educated. There is variant of Kannada called Havyaka Kannada which is spoken by Havyaka brahmanas. Tulu and Konkani are other languages which are spoken by few people here.
By buses, auto rickshaw ( Auto ), van, jeep( SUV ),car and bicycle. These are various automobiles used to commute these days by the people of Shimoga district. In old days when automobiles were less, bullock carts and bicycle ( cycle ) were common mode of transport. Lorries or trucks are used to carry goods and commodities.
Keladi temples at Keladi near Sagara town for its historical temples built by Keladi Nayaka dynasty. Hosanagara for its cattle fair. Nagara village for ruins of forts of Bednur.
Local vegetarian food. The vegetarian breakfast generally consists of any of different types of Dosa ( thin crepe ) made from rice, lentil or different flours. Idli, meduwada, Sajjige or Uppitu made from semolina and spiced beaten rice are other options fot the breakfast.Lunch consists of dry curry made of vegetables seasoned with spices and oil, soup like saaru , Huli ( gravy of vegetables ) eaten with cooked rice and finished at end with butter milk or curds. The lunch some times may contains local sweet dishes like Laadu,Payasa, Halwa among others.Coffee and Tea made from cow or buffalo milk mixed with crystal sugar ( white sugar ) are the beverages which are consumed by most people of this district.
Kashaya ( concoction ) is drink made from different spices and herbs. As the district has rich flora, local people drink Kashaya made from locally available herbs. It is healthy and is used as medicine by locals for different diseases. Generally the Kashaya is made by boiling spices or herbs in water ( neeru ). The Kashaya may contain single spice or herb or may be combination of many. Many people add cow's milk or jaggery to Kashaya to suit the tastes of individuals. Spices used may be ginger ( Shunti ), black pepper (Karimenasu) coriander ( Kothambari),Cummin ( Jeerige ) etc.
Vast areas of Shivamogga ( Shimoga ) district are covered by dense and evergreen forests and jungles. Many predators like Tiger, Leopards are found in these jungles and nearby areas.Also Asiatic elephants, Kati ( Indian Bison ) are found here which can charge or attack human beings . Venomous snakes like King Cobra, Cobra, Viper are found in jungles and adjoing villages.Be extra careful while trekking or walking through forests or fields in villages. Most of the villages do not have medical care facility or physician ( Doctor ) or para medic.During rainy season streams, rivulets, rivers, waterfalls may overflow and flood within minutes. Many of the forest area do not have human settlements so help cannot be expected in case of mishap or emergency. Also communications like landline telephones or cellular phone( mobile phone ) signals are not found in many villages and jungles. If you are trekking carry Torch (flash light),water,food and other essential things with you.
