Shey - a great place to experience ladakh - far of the beaten track.
Shey is the ancient capital of Ladakh. The small rural village is located 15 km south-east of busy capital Leh. The village is surrounded by spectacular mountains - a breathtaking view day by day.
There are videos and pictures from Shey in the galleries of lehguesthouse.com (source: botho guesthouse)
Getting to Leh is very easy and a great possibility to experience the ladakhi transportation system. Just stand by the main road an wave your hand if you see a small Suzuki van (the vans look like small boxes). The ride to Leh takes about 20 minutes and costs 20 rupees.
To Shey Palace it´s only a 500m walk. The climb up to Old Shey Palace will be rewarded with a fantastic view on one of the most beautiful landscapes of Ladakh. The Shey Oasis has been described as the heart of Ladakh.
The wonderful Thikse Monastery is about 4 km down the road towards the famous Hemis Monastery. The monasteries Stakna, Stok and Matho as well as Indus River are in visual range.
Shey is home to the Druk White Lotus School, which is famous for two things: it was used as 'Rancho's School' in the 3 Idiots movie and it has won many international awards for the quality of its architectural design.
To the Indus River it`s only a 10 minutes.
