Sarkaņi is in a territory Madonas novads.


Sarkaņi, also known as Sarkaņu Pagasts (Municipality of Sarkaņi) is part of Madonas novads, but up to the territorial reform in 2009 existed as a separate administrative unit with its own local government. The territory of Sarkaņi comprises fraction centers such as Sarkaņi, Biksēre, Aizkuja and some smaller fractions.

Sakaņi is located on the regional highway Madona-Gulbene just few km from Madona town. Despite the territory is crossed by the railway line, there are no stops in its territory. Fractions Sarkaņi and Biksēre are easily reachable by public bus from Madona, in daytime there is a bus almost every hour (the buses with destinations usually Gulbene, Smiltene, Lubāna, Cesvaine, Balvi). There are no airfields in its territory. Nearest international airport is in Riga, capital of Latvia some 170km away.

Walking, cycling (in summer), car (anytime). Between Sarkaņi and Biksēre you can move also by bus.

  • Skiing in winter, both cross-country and downhill. Downhill skiing is possible at Rēķu Kalns skiing complex, open every day (when there is snow) and features ski and snowboard rental, illuminated slope, sauna, restaurant etc.
  • Fishing. Rivers like Rieba and Kuja are rich in trout. You need to purchase the fishing license (check at outdoor shops in Madona or elsewhere)

  • Rēķu kalns skiing complex.

Drink[edit][add listing]

One possibility is at Rēķu Kalns skiing complex, it offers also accommodation (rooms) and sauna. Other near places to drink are either in Madona or in Cesvaine, still very close,just few km.

Stay safe[edit]

Extremely safe and quite place. The only real danger may be some aggressive and unleashed dogs nearby their homes.
