Get in[edit]

Santiago has an international airport in Praia which is also a domestic hub.

The port has some connections by boat to other islands.

Get around[edit]

Tarrafal can be reached from Praia with a shared car (aluguer) for 500 escudos (2019). The car leaves from the central marked in Praia when the car is full. There are also aluguers that are going to other destinations, but the locals will guide you to the right one if you tell them your destination. It might take up to an hour or longer for the car from/to Taraffal to fill up, so plan ahead if you are going from Tarrafal to the airport in Praia. The journey is about 1h30m and the roads literally goes on the mountain ridges; it provides a magnificent view. It is also possible to ask the driver to drop you off on the way, but expect to pay the same price.

  • The fishing village of Tarrafal, which is situated on the opposite side of the island from Praia. It has a nice beach and local fishermens still use it to store their old-fashioned, low-tech fishing boats.
  • Cidade Velha: founded in 1462, this is the first European colonial settlement in the tropics. The village is easily accessible from Praia with a cab or aliguer. It is situated in an old riverbed and is an oasis in the otherwise sparsely vegetated island. It is an UNESCO world heritage site.
