'San Jeronimo is a small mountain village in the southern zone of Costa Rica.

San Jeronimo is a small coffee growing village, of about 400 people, in the southern zone of Costa Rica. It is of the beaten path, and visitors are rewarded for their effort with both beautiful nature and friendly local who offer a truly authentic "tico" experience. The town offers amazing access to the surrounding mountains, namely Cerro Chirripo, the tallest mountain in the country, and Cerro Ena. Apart from that, for nature lovers, the town offers a variety of hiking to several waterfalls, and up nearby mountains as well as local coffee tours. There are several lodging and food options within the town, all very small scale operations run by locals.

San Jerónimo is located 45 kilometers northeast of San Isidro de El General in the district of San Pedro in the southern pacific zone of Costa Rica. There are various ways to get here, and even without a car you can access this beautiful mountain town!

By bus[edit]

Public Transport: San Jerónimo is accessible by bus from the nearby town of San Isidro de General. Buses leave from the the central market daily at 11:30am and 4:00pm. The bus is located in the northeast corner of the market. It is red, white, and blue and should display Zapotal as the location. The ride lasts about a hour and fifteen minutes and costs ¢1,850. San Jerónimo is the last stop on the bus line.


By car[edit]

-From San Isidro de General: drive 26km (about 30 min) south on the Inter-American highway. Turn left at the entrance for Union-Fatima-Zapotal, where you will see a sign for “Cataratas Kilo”. San Jerónimo is the last town on that road, 12km (around 20 minutes) further. The last 6km of this road are a well kept gravel road. Search ATURENA in google maps.

– From Buenos Aires: drive 37km (35 minutes) north on the Inter-American highway. Turn right at the entrance for Union-Fatima-Zapotal, where you will see a sign for “Cataratas Kilo”. Get around[edit]

Public transport with in the town is limited. Walking is a great option as the climate is favorable. Most roads are dirt and should be driven in a 4x4 vehicle. Transportation can be coordinated at the local tourism association. Locals are friendly and often give rides!

Cerro Chirripo: the tallest mountain in Costa Rica, rises to an altitude of 3820 meters (12,532 feet) above sea level. The popular three day hike starts in the town of San Jerónimo and passes through five different ecological zones, presenting visitors with mystical cloud forests, babbling brooks and spectacular landscapes, including the savanna de los leones, a main attraction of the trail. It is inhabited by tapirs, orchids, quetzals, monkeys and a wide range of tropical flora and fauna. The hike is 14 kilometers (8.7 miles) and ascends 2400 meters (7874 feet) – it is more demanding than your average trail. This amazing hike is a favorite for people looking to explore off the beaten path in Costa Rica.

Cerro Ena: a peak in the Talamanca Mountain Range, is situated at 3126 meters (10255 feet). Located in the Southern Pacific area of Costa Rica, it resides within the protected ˝Área de Conservación La Amistad˝, an international park shared between Costa Rica and Panama. Due to the parks unique environments, and the flora and fauna that inhabit them, the park was declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1989. The ascent of Cerro Ena is 12 km (7.5 miles), lasting approximately six hours one-way. The trip length is optional, but a full three-day trek is recommended, as this option provides the complete experience. Presenting the opportunity to discover and explore one of the most beautiful, hidden peaks of the Talamanca

Cataratas Kilo: This beautiful hike winds over two kilometers into the mountains that surround the town. Following a beautiful mountain stream, you will encounter 13 waterfalls, of all shapes and sizes. The surrounding nature offers an atmosphere of unique tranquility, comprised of a vast array of local flora and fauna.

Agro San Miguel Adventures: A perfect mix of hiking and adventure, this tour takes you past seven waterfalls, three of which you can rappel down, experiencing the waterfalls by becoming part of them.

La Chiripa: La Chiripa is located 8km outsde of the small mountian town of San Jeronimo, on the slopes of Cerro Chirripo. It offers beautiful high-mountain landscapes, trails through winding canyons, and breathtaking waterfalls. Here you can observe the flora and fauna of the tropical high mountains, including numerous bird species. We offer a rustic mountain cabin with an incredible view. Here we have room for 8 visitors and offer delicious food cooked over a traditional wood stove.

Pandun falls: High up in the mountains overlooking San Jerónimo, you will find The Pandun Waterfalls. The winding 2 kilometer hike offers excellent views of incredible landscapes bellow and the mountains surrounding, in addition to the two beautiful cascades that highlight the trip. During the hike it is possible to see many types of native flora and fauna, including spider monkeys and white-headed Capuchin. In addition, the tour also offers a brief tour of a local avocado plantation.

Zaddy Coffee tour: a 2 hour coffee tour, learn about the process from plant to mug! Includes snacks and a coffee tasting.

Cerro ena trail race: Once a year, usually in March, a 29km trail race is held up nearby Cerro Ena.

There is a small diner in the middle of the town. There are also two small trout farms a few kilometers north of the town where you can catch your own delicious trout!

There are several community members that have built cabins to host guests, they are very comfortable and provide an interesting look into local life. Food is offered with the lodging.
