Around the city, you can find natural pools and waterpools of sweet water all along the beautiful rio Cesar. Access by bike or mototaxi and taxi.

In around 30 minutes, you can get to Cañaverales, where you can visit the Manantial, a source of crystal-clear water which the locals use for their consumption, agriculture and livestock. To get there, you take a beautiful ecotrail. As the place is a forest reserve, it is prohibited to make fires, leave trash behind or enter with vehicles. This place is also full of red howling monkeys passing through the trees. You will enjoy their sight and sounds. It is also possible to see colourful lizards, and there are 76 species of birds in this area. With luck, you could also spot ant-eaters, margays and armadillos.

Just 20 minutes away from San Juan del Cesar, you can access the Salto de Corral de Piedra. It is an easy access through stairs. The water is crystal-clear and cold. It is possible to bathe in the natural pool and jump from enormous colourful rocks in front of the waterfall.

This natural pool is very popular among locals and tourists alike. It is located 20 minutes after the Corral de Piedra. You can enjoy a small beach with shallow waters, as well as a very deep pool of cold water with natural bubbles. From there, it is possible to organize eco-touristic activities such as trekking and cyclo-cross.

Part of the river Cesar, this place offers a wonderful view from huge rocks. The pool is quite large and you can enjoy cold and warm water. The access is through the path El Placer. In this area, you can also visit the home of a professor who developed fields of pineapple, mango, plantains, cassava, flowers, etc., in the middle of this desertic environment, in an effort to teach locals and tourists that with work and planification, it is possible to overcome food access issues. This is literally an oasis in the desert, with a huge and centenial old tree.

La Sierrita is located in a more secluded place, in a village of the Sierra Nevada, 25 kms from the center of the municipality. There, you can enjoy the sight of the Piedra Escalera, a rock old of hundreds of years which is part of the religious history of Colombia, as a sanctuary of the Virgen del Rosario. You can find the Ermita del Rosario, constructed in 1714 in honor of the Virgen del Rosario, who appeared there a few times according to the villagers. There are also a few houses which used to be an orphanage until 1935, when they became a religious seminary until 1945. Today, they are used as homes by locals.

Achintukua is the indigenous capital of the Wiwa population, where was built an Ethnoeducation Rural Center. The Wiwa are a community who mainly live from agriculture, such as cassava, plaintains, corn, beans, coca and sugar cane plantations, as well as coffee. They also grow the agave, which they use to craft traditional hammocks and bags.
