Pench National Park is in the Plains of India. About 90% of the park is in the Seoni and Chhindwara districts of Madhya Pradesh while the remaining 10% is in northwestern Maharastra.


Pench National Park derives its name from the River Pench flowing through the National Park. The park is located in Chhindwara and Seoni districts of Madhya Pradesh in India.

Pench National Park is spread over 758 sq km. The park is located in Madhya Pradesh district. The park has various species of animals, among which the deers, wild gaurs, monkeys are easy to spot. The tigers are fairly easy to sight post the baby boom whereas the leopards are difficult to watch as they do not come on the safari trail often.

This forest inspired Ruyard Kipling to write the famous novel The Jungle Book.


This forest inspired Ruyard Kipling to write the famous novel The Jungle Book. Earlier till 1977 the park was a sanctuary but the status was raised to of National park in 1983. This is the 19th project tiger reserve in India and was declared so in 1992.


The forest area of Pench National Park is redolent with tropical dry deciduous teak and interspersed with bamboo trees and other species of shrubs. The Kullu tree in Pench is a highlight, and visitors are often mesmerized by its almost white bark and spread out branches that are a startling contrast to the lush greenery around.

Flora and fauna[edit]

The Pench National Park is very rich in fauna and a number of endangered species have made it their habitat. The bird population in the park counts to be over 210 species like barbets, bulbul, minivets orioles, wagtails, munias, mynas, waterfowls and blue kingfishers.


Pench has a tropical monsoonal continental climate, with a distinct monsoons (July to September), winters (November to February) and summers (April to June). Summers are very hot with mercury level touches as high as 45°C and winters are extremely cold with minimum temperature reaches to the freezing point in the early mornings. The day time in the winter season is quite pleasant. South west monsoons offer heavy rain falls.

Nagpur and Jabalpur are two nearest airport well connected with cities like Mumbai and Delhi. The nearest railway station is Nagpur. By road one could Pench National Park is approximately 92 kms from Nagpur and 192 kms from Jabalpur.


The park rule requires you to hire a gypsy and a guide for sightseeing. There are currently two slots to visit the Pench National Park in Madhya Pradesh. A morning and an afternoon. Recently a night patrolling initiative has been taken by the forest department in the buffer zone, where the guests might rent a gypsy/their own car and go with a guide after paying the requisite fee. Excellent sighting of wolf and sloth bear have been noted in the region.

The Madhya Pradesh Tourism provide assistant to book the hotels and resorts direct from desk. The Riverwood Forest Retreat-Pench helps organise the permits for guests staying with them. Jungle Home Resorts is one of the old Resort in Pench National Park.

The best way to get around Pench National park is in open Gypsy that is available on rent. The booking charges are approximately Rs 1230/ per safari. If you are reaching in main tourist season or weekends or holidays it’s better to book the safari in advance.

Pench National Park is know for the its wildlife and flora fauna. Beside the Pench National Park, Bird Watching is another things to do at Park.

Pench Tiger Reserve - Pench Tiger Reserve is one of the most visited place at Pench National Park. You can spot the Royal Bengal Tiger and Leopard here. Apart from the Tiger it is home for many birds specially Owl. Owl breeding is another attraction for Pench National Park.

Bird Watching at Pench - Bird Watching at Pench is another fun at Pench National Park. At Pench National Park over 285 species of Bird are found here. It include both migratory and resident such as Indian Pitta, Malabar Pied Hornbill, Grey-headed Fishing Eagle, Osprey, White-eyed Buzzard, etc. Post Monsoon and Winter is time to see many migratory bird such as Barheaded Geese, Brahmini Duck, Pochards, Coots etc.

Elephant Ride: This is one of the best ways to give a closer view to the animals of Pench National park. Tourists can enjoy the amazing sightseeing as well as enjoy the wild animals in their natural habitat.

Jungles Walk (Nature trails): One of the best ways to explore and understand wildlife on foot. Forest department has made jungle trails in some areas. A guide assist you during your this trail.

Outside the park, you will see people selling wildlife postcards. You can also spot some people selling musk. They start with a heavy rate, but eventually come down. Authenticity may be dubious, and to convince you, they'll perform some tricks. Don't fall for that.

Outside the national park, you will find a lot of dhabas where you can sit for a snack or for lunch. The food you will eat at these locations will be delicious and you will never believe the low rates.

Always try going for the simplest food as possible. They do not have a long menu, but whatever they make is worth eating.

The National Park authority has already having arrangement for food and drinking facility, But these canteen are limited in choice and very few in variety.

There are various restaurants that offers guest with tea, coffee or cool drinks. United-21 Pench resort is one such resort where you would find all these at affordable rates.

Pench National Park itself have the Cottage from Madhya Tourism. Many private resort is also located near the Park which can be best option for stay.

United-21 Jungle Resorts, is resort located in Jamun Tola Vilalge near Turia Gate offers air cooled rooms for its customers. It is advisable to book the accommodation way before your visit as it is hard to find accommodations after arrival.


The private and MP Tourism resort is situated very near to the park and it provides affordable lodging options for customers at budget rates. This resort also provides facilities like phone and Dish TV.

Stay safe[edit]

Pench National Park is spread over a vast area which is covered by a dense forest. For this reason, there are few dos and donts which have to be followed by its visitors. Following the instructions would help in avoiding any disturbance to animals and keep tourists safe from any unpleasant incidents.


• One forest dept guide per vehicle is compulsory.
• Max speed limit within the core area of the park is 20 km per hour.
• Remember that all wildlife has the right of way.
• Maintain silence & discipline while in the park. Disturbed wildlife such as tiger, bear & bison may attack your   vehicle if unduly startled.
• Always carry binocular and camera with you, as it is not available on hiring basis.
• Carry sufficient drinking water during excursions into the park.
• Please patiently await your turn for tiger viewing from elephant back.
• Always cooperate fully with the advice & instructions given by your naturalist, guide & mahout.


• Do not use the horn of your vehicle.
• Do not get out of your vehicle except where permitted.
• Do not use the flash when photographing wildlife.
• Do not smoke, or carry cigarettes & matches.
• Do not carry mobile phones inside the park.
• Do not take transistor radios into the park.
• Do not litter the park with waste materials of any kind.
• Do not enter the park with firearms, or any kind of combustible materials.
• Do not feed the animals or birds.
• Do not remove or carry away flowers, branches, etc from the park

Wild life lovers are welcome to the land of tigers. Today Bandhavgarh, in Madhya Pradesh, India, has a high density of tigers but limited visibility. There is another great wildlife sanctuary called Kanha National Park, where visitors can sight several species of wild animals. They can also enjoy a comfortable stay at Kanha resort which has plenty of facilities for its guests.
