Omoa, Honduras

Omoa is in Honduras. It is a town on the Caribbean Sea coast, just west of Puerto Cortes and a short journey north of San Pedro Sula.

Omoa was the main Caribbean port of Honduras until the mid 19th century. Now it is a very laid-back, very small, picturesque beach town and a pleasant day trip from San Pedro Sula.

Get in[edit]

Take the divided highway from San Pedro Sula to Puerto Cortes. Turn north and drive for about 15 minutes. You'll see the signs for Omoa. Turn right at the sea-life fountain and go about a half mile to the beach.

Get around[edit]

The beach area of Omoa is small and walkable, but there are cabs available. It would be easy enough to walk from the beach area to the fort for many people.

  • Rolis Place. 40L for camping; 50L for open air, roofed hammock shelter; 70L for dorm, 250L for double with private bathroom, 180L without bathroom. Nice garden setting, 80m from the beach. Cooking facilities, bikes, hammocks available. Foreign owner does not seem to care for visitors too much and the treatment is likewise: not very welcoming or friendly. Don't ask the owner if his name is Roli, he will get mad and say he's been hearing that question far too often. No internet facilities or WiFi for guests.
  • Pias Place.
  • Suenos De Mar, Barrio de Playa, Omoa, 504-658-9047, [1]. checkin: 2:00PM; checkout: 11:00AM. Beachfront Hotel offering: A/C,cable TV,hot water, private bathrooms. On-site:Restaurant, bar, internet access, gift shop, book exchange. Lounge area and inner-space garden make this a great place. Owners are a very friendly Canadian couple. At the end of the line of hotels and bars, so more quiet. In July/August it is exceptionally quiet here, as everywhere else in Omoa. Great place, recommended. $35.  edit
  • Henry's Sunset Playa ([email protected]), 504-3369-0494 (), [2]. Newly remodeled private room with shower, color TV and A/C, wireless internet. Quite possibly the nicest mattress in town. As of Feb 2014, the Henry's is adding a hotel wing with several rooms and suites. They will be the nicest rooms in Omoa when they open in April/May 2014  edit
