Get in[edit]

By plane[edit]

Okinoerabu Airport (IATA: OKE) is located in the east of the island, 10 to 15 minites away from downtown Wadomari, or 20 to 25 minutes from downtown China. Japan Air Commuter [2] (a subsidiary of Japan Airlines [3]) flies daily to Okinoerabu from Kagoshima, Amami Oshima and Yoronjima. A daily route between Tokunoshima and Okinawa/Naha via Okinoerabu is to be launched in 2018 by Japan Air Communiter [4]. While air travel to the island is expensive (e.g. single journey from Kagoshima costs around 30,000 yen at ordinary fare), this is the fastest way to reach the island.

Stay safe[edit]

Okinoerabu Island is known for a safe place and reported crimes are uncommon. Unlike Amami-Oshima, Tokunoshima and Okinawa, there is no poisonous snake or dangerous species in the island. However, there are some dangerous species in the ocean and some beaches are not suitable for swimming due to strong tidal flow. It is advisable to take local advice before swimming. The tropical cyclone (typhoon) season runs between June and November.
