Naples (Florida)

From Wikitravel
Jump to: navigation, search

Naples is a city in Collier County in southwest Florida.

Get in[edit]

Southwest Florida International Airport (IATA: RSW), also known as Regional Southwest Florida International, is located in Fort Myers 42 miles north of Downtown Naples. United Airlines, Air Canada, American Airlines, United Express, Spirit Airlines, Jet Blue, Frontier, Delta, Southwest, and AirTran Airways are among the airlines that fly here. From there rent a car and drive to Naples.

  • Private car service - An alternative to taxis, car services are useful for getting to the airport from the outer boroughs where taxis are harder to find, or if you prefer to have transportation reserved in advance. Typically $70+ between RSW and Naples

Private Aviation[edit]

Members of affluent communities in Southwest Florida often use charter planes to fly directly to/from Naples, with two airports available within 15 miles of the city. Naples Airport (FAA LID: APF), formerly known as Naples Municipal Airport, is the city's main airport located just 2 nautical miles (4 km) northeast of the central business district, offering the most direct air travel. Marco Island Executive Airport (FAA LID: MKY), known simply as Marco Island Airport, is available around 15 miles south of Naples, located just southwest of the Tamiami Trail. Air taxi and jet charter companies such as Naples Air Inc., Velox Air Charter [26] and Naples Jet Charter offer access to a variety of aircraft based in SW Florida and across the country, ranging from the small piston and turboprop aircraft to business jets and luxury planes.

Naples has a subtropical climate, with temperate and generally dry weather from the late fall through late spring and hotter and more humid weather in the summer through early fall with typical tropical thunderstorms in the late afternoon giving way to sunsets. However, Arctic blasts affect the area for a few days every winter, bringing temperatures around freezing, as well as frost. Snow flurries have been recorded before.

Get around[edit]

The best way to get around Naples is to rent a bicycle. Alternately, you can rent a car. If you stay in "Old Naples" you are in easy walking or biking distance of both the 5th and 3rd Street shopping and restaurant districts, the renowned Naples Pier and the beach.
