Ferghana Valley (Uzbekistan)

Default Banner.jpg

Uzbekistan's portion of the Ferghana Valley is in the extreme southeast of the country.

Other destinations[edit]

It is the most densely populated part of Uzbekistan.

Almost everyone in the Ferghana Valley speaks Uzbek. Russian is also widely understood, particularly by the older generations and young men who have spent time outside Uzbekistan.

Get in[edit]

From Tashkent[edit]

There is only one road entering the Ferghana Valley from the rest Uzbekistan and it is heavily guarded. Taxis from Tashkent leave for the major cities of the Ferghana Valley (Kokand, Ferghana, Margilon, Namangan, and Andijan) from the Qo'yliq bazaar in southeast Tashkent. Crossing the pass into the Ferghana Valley, there is a checkpoint where they check passports. Foreigners usually are registered, but there should be no problem.

Note: When going through tunnels there and in the surrounding area, you cannot take photographs or use mobile phones. The police will stop you and you might have some problems!

A new train line is also being built from Tashkent to the Ferghana Valley (the old line dips into Tajikistan, so is not recommended for tourists). No date has been given so far for when this will open.

From Kyrgyzstan[edit]

There are many Kyrgyz-Uzbek border crossings in the valley (since the physical valley itself is shared between Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan). The most commonly used is the crossing from Osh to Andijan.

Get around[edit]

Taxies from certain points of cities go to all other cities. There also microbuses.

Stay safe[edit]

Ferghana is very Islamic region, so dressing should be modest.

Get out[edit]

Ferghana is a "corner" of Uzbekistan. You can either go back or go to other country - Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan have borders in the valley, while China is not far away over the mountains through Kyrgyzstan.
