Michoacan is a beautiful state on the Pacific Coast of Mexico. With mountains to the east and Pacific shore to the west, the diversity of the State is unmatched in Mexico. Vegetables and fruit are abundant year around. The people are proud and friendly. It is said that the biggest export from Michoacan, is it's young men who provide millions of dollars in local revenue to support their families, by working in the United States. On the Pacific Coast, the local Nahuat indigenous community is working hard to prevent a Cancun-like resort area from being built by outside speculators. Their "Ostula manifest" also denounces the four lane highway being proposed for their territory.
Michoacan has some unsafe region which is known as Tierra Caliente, which means hot land, as its not a touristical region you never get close to it (except crossing it on your way to michoacans pacific ocean beaches). Between 2009 and 2014 michoacan has had organized drug related crime, which has moved upstate or downstate to Guerrero, Jalisco, Guanajuato and Molima. Michoacan is a very rural state and as such has not enough economic prosperity to attract organised crime. Drugs growth is close to zero. The advocado growth in the uruapan region has generated some kind of raquetting, which is invisible to an outsider, of the advocado growers. However as visiting advocado monoculture Deserts is probably not your cup of tea i would not worry. As anywhere in Mexico Travelers should watch out at night and use their common sense.
