A town has existed as Porthaethwy for many centuries as one of the main crossing points from the mainland to the island of Anglesey. Cattle and sheep used to be herded across the dangerous waters of the Menai Strait by men in boats and the several landing places can still be seen. It was not until Thomas Telford designed and built the famous suspension bridge over the strait that the town became kn own as Menai Bridge. The original Bridge is still in use as the main access to the town and is reputed to be the oldest main road suspension bridge in the world
The Gulf Stream makes the UK's winters relatively mild. The best times to head to Menai Bridge is from spring to autumn as the winter can be damp and grey. Snow and frost are rarities but rain is possible throughout the year.
