Mežica is a city in Koroška/Carinthia.
Mežica is (after Idrija) the most important mining town in Slovenia. The mine was closed in 1997 but is now open for tourists.
Mežica is located 12km from Ravne na Koroškem, 8km from Črna na Koroškem and 10km from Bleiburg/Pliberk in Austria.
There is one bus daily from Ljubljana at 19:05 and 2 buses M-F only, at 15:15 and 17:15 (schooldays only). Multiple buses are available daily from Velenje.
Spomenik Rudarju in the central part of the town, the primary school OŠ Mežica was recently renovated and looks very nice.
Hike to Peca. Follow the signs for Peca (Dom na Peci). Visit the mine Podzemlje Pece. It is a unique experience. Visiting the mine requires taking a mine car (train) and exploring the mine with a tour guide. Tours are held daily except Mondays at 11am. Another option is to visit the mine by bike.
