As in many parts of Czech Republic except Prague, you might have some difficulties communicate in English, especially while communication with elderly people, although there are young and middle-aged people who can speak English very well. Because this town is very popular for German and Russian tourists, their language is wider accepted than English in the past. Mariánské Lázně is mostly known for its spa and healing procedures with tradition over 200 years. This also determines the most prevalent reason for visiting the city, considering, that in Czech Republic, Germany and even in other countries there are incentives, which covers the expenses from social insurance. Accordingly, many hotels offer relaxation packages. However, since late 2010´s, the stereotype of old German/Russian tourist is being overcome. Currently, there is wider diversity of visitors, both from nationality and age perspective, and the English language is becoming more prevalent today.
Except its mineral waters, Mariánské Lázně is famous for its surrounding, forests and fresh air. The town is embedded in a valley on slope of protected area "Slavkovský Les", with hilly terrain on the west, north and north-east direction, with attitude from 550 - 950 meters, making it great place for walking, mountain bikes, cross-country skiing and other outdoor activities.
By Train: Mariánské Lázně is served by direct trains from Prague via Pilsen every two hours during the day. The journey from Prague takes 3 hours. Regular fare is CZK 247, second person in a group (of 2 or more) pays CZK 149, extra people in a group pay CZK 124, SporoTiket is CZK 170-220.
By Car: From Prague - use highway D5, then exit 128 and road I/21 (about 25 KM) and follow signs or navigation. From Nurenberg - use highway A6, which turns to D5 on Czech Border, then exit 128 and proceed as above From Munich - use highway A9, then A93 and ultimately proceed on A6, then follow the Nurenberg route
The town is walkable, although there are trolley buses available as part of the town's public transport.
