Mariánské Lázně (German: Marienbad) [5] is a spa town in West Bohemia in Western Czech Republic with a population of 13,300 and is close to the German (Bavaria) border.

Understand[edit]

As in many parts of Czech Republic except Prague, you might have some difficulties communicate in English, especially while communication with elderly people, although there are young and middle-aged people who can speak English very well. Because this town is very popular for German and Russian tourists, their language is wider accepted than English in the past. Mariánské Lázně is mostly known for its spa and healing procedures with tradition over 200 years. This also determines the most prevalent reason for visiting the city, considering, that in Czech Republic, Germany and even in other countries there are incentives, which covers the expenses from social insurance. Accordingly, many hotels offer relaxation packages. However, since late 2010´s, the stereotype of old German/Russian tourist is being overcome. Currently, there is wider diversity of visitors, both from nationality and age perspective, and the English language is becoming more prevalent today.

Except its mineral waters, Mariánské Lázně is famous for its surrounding, forests and fresh air. The town is embedded in a valley on slope of protected area "Slavkovský Les", with hilly terrain on the west, north and north-east direction, with attitude from 550 - 950 meters, making it great place for walking, mountain bikes, cross-country skiing and other outdoor activities.
